Chapter 5 - The Awakening

Grace Ward opened her eyes to the sound of a steady, rhythmic beep.
The light in the room was soft and warm. She felt no sharp pain, only a dull ache throughout her body and a heavy numbness in her limbs. She blinked, trying to clear her blurred vision, and noticed the crisp white linen sheets, the private leather couches, and the massive bouquet of fresh lilies sitting on the windowsill.
This wasn't a county hospital ward.
She tried to sit up, a quiet gasp escaping her throat as her broken ribs protested.
"Don't move," a deep, quiet voice commanded from the armchair in the corner.
Grace turned her head slowly. Sitting in the shadows was Gabriel Rourke, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, a folder of legal documents resting on his lap.
"Mr... Mr. Rourke?" Grace rasped, her throat dry. "Where... where am I? Where is Ellie? Oh God, Ellie—"
"She is safe," Gabriel interrupted smoothly, standing up and pouring a glass of water from a pitcher on the table. He walked over, holding the glass to her lips so she could drink. "She is at my estate. She is warm, she is well-fed, and she has three nurses looking after her."
Grace drank greedily, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as relief washed over her. "How... how long have I been here?"
"Five days," Gabriel said. "You were hit by a vehicle near your apartment. You suffered internal injuries and several fractures. I had you moved here to my private medical team."
"I can't... I can't pay for this," Grace sobbed, covering her face with her thin hands. "Mr. Rourke, I don't have any money. My rent... my jobs—"
"Everything is taken care of," Gabriel said firmly. "Your landlord has been paid for the next three years. Your belongings have been moved out of that hovel and brought to my estate. You no longer work as my housekeeper, Mrs. Ward."
Grace looked up, horror flashing in her eyes. "You're... you're firing me?"
Gabriel looked at her—really looked at her for the first time. He saw the dark circles beneath her hazel eyes, the stubborn strength in her jaw, the fierce, protective devotion of a mother who had sacrificed everything to keep her daughter alive.
"I am not firing you," Gabriel said softly. "I am inviting you to live at my estate as my guest. You and Ellie will never want for anything again."
Grace stared at him, completely stunned. "Why? Why are you doing this for us? You don't even know us!"
Gabriel pulled Thomas Ward's faded photograph from his pocket, setting it gently on the bedside table beside her.
"Because five nights ago, I watched your four-year-old daughter cut a single slice of bread in half so she could feed a dead man and save the rest for you," Gabriel said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I watched a child preserve her love in a room full of darkness. And I realized that I have been dead for three years... and your daughter brought me back to life."
May you like
Grace covered her mouth, her chest heaving as she wept softly. She looked at the photograph of her late husband, then at the powerful, dangerous man standing beside her bed with tears in his eyes.
"Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you, Gabriel."
