Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

For three days, Grace Ward lay in a medically induced coma in the VIP wing of St. Jude’s Hospital, funded entirely by Gabriel Rourke.
During those three days, the Lake Forest estate underwent a quiet, drastic transformation.
Gabriel hardly left the house except to visit the hospital. He moved his workspace from the isolated study on the ground floor to the room adjacent to the nursery. He hired two full-time pediatric nurses to monitor Ellie’s health, ensuring she received proper nutrition, medical checkups, and round-the-clock care.
Ellie didn't understand everything that was happening, but she knew she was warm, she was fed, and the tall, quiet man with the blue eyes was always nearby.
On the fourth morning, Gabriel walked down the third-floor hallway—the wing of the mansion he had locked and abandoned three years ago after the deaths of his wife and daughter.
He stood before the mahogany door of Lily’s bedroom. His hand shook as he reached for his pocket, pulling out the silver key he hadn't touched in over a thousand days.
He unlocked the door.
The air inside was stale, preserved in time. White dust sheets covered the furniture. In the corner sat a dollhouse, a set of wooden building blocks, and near the doorway, a pair of small yellow rain boots.
Gabriel walked in, his heart pounding. He didn't break down this time. Instead, he pulled off the dust sheets, opening the windows to let the crisp November sunlight flood the room. He picked up a plush brown teddy bear resting on the small bed.
He carried the teddy bear downstairs to the nursery.
Ellie was sitting on the rug, drawing with a set of new colored pencils Gabriel had bought her. She looked up as he entered.
"Mr. Rourke?"
Gabriel knelt down, setting the teddy bear beside her. "This belonged to a very special little girl a long time ago," he said softly. "She would want you to have it."
Ellie picked up the bear, hugging it tight against her chest. "What was her name?"
"Lily," Gabriel whispered, the name tasting like sweet rain on his tongue for the first time in three years. "Her name was Lily."
"Thank you, Mr. Rourke," Ellie said, kissing the bear’s velvet ear. "I'll keep him safe."
While peace was slowly taking root inside the Rourke estate, storm clouds were gathering in the streets of Chicago.
News of Gabriel’s sudden interest in a common maid and her daughter had begun to leak through the ranks of the underworld. In the dimly lit offices of the Vane family enterprise, Victor Vane and his daughter, Celeste, sat at a long glass table, staring at surveillance photos of Gabriel’s car parked outside St. Jude’s Hospital.
Celeste Vane was a striking woman with platinum hair, sharp green eyes, and a heart made of cold calculation. She played with her diamond engagement ring, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the photos of Gabriel carrying Ellie wrapped in his coat.
"He's soft," Celeste sneered, tossing the photos onto the table. "The Quiet King is playing father to a beggar's child while our wedding is six months away. It's an insult to the Vane name."
Victor Vane, a heavy-set man with graying hair and deep scars across his jaw, chewed on a cigar. "Gabriel Rourke isn't soft, Celeste. He's dangerous. But if he has found something he cares about... then he has finally given us a weakness."

"What do you want to do, Father?" Celeste asked, a cruel smile spreading across her red lips.
"We remind him of the agreement," Victor growled. "We remind him that a truce with the Vanes requires absolute loyalty. And if a maid's child gets in the way of our family taking control of the southern shipping ports... we eliminate the child."
