Chapter 10 - A Table Built for Three

Six months later. Early May.
Spring had arrived in Lake Forest, painting the twelve wooded acres of the Rourke estate in brilliant shades of green, gold, and pink cherry blossoms. The heavy iron gates stood open to the warm afternoon breeze, and the sound of birds echoed through the manicured gardens.
The old, silent mansion was gone.
In its place was a home filled with light, music, and warmth.
On the grand limestone terrace overlooking the back gardens, a small dining table was set for three. Fresh flowers stood in a crystal vase at the center, beside bowls of strawberries, warm pastries, and fresh orange juice.
Grace stood near the stone balustrade, wearing a simple, elegant sun hat and a light yellow dress that caught the spring breeze. Her skin was glowing, her hazel eyes bright and filled with peace.
Beside her, Ellie—now five years old, healthy, tall, and full of boundless energy—was running across the green lawn with a golden retriever puppy Gabriel had given her for her birthday. Her laughter bubbled through the air, pure and unburdened by the dark memories of the past.
Gabriel walked out onto the terrace, wearing a light linen shirt, his dark hair soft in the sunlight. The cold, unyielding lines of his face had softened, replaced by a deep, quiet contentment.
He walked over to Grace, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin softly against her shoulder.
"What are you thinking about?" Grace asked, turning her head slightly to kiss his cheek.
"I was thinking about four-year-old girls who eat half a slice of bread," Gabriel whispered softly, looking out at Ellie playing on the grass.
Grace turned in his arms, resting her hands against his chest. "She saved your life, Gabriel."
"No," Gabriel said, looking deep into Grace’s hazel eyes. "You both did."
He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket, opening it to reveal a stunning, simple emerald ring—not a corporate business transaction like the ring he had almost given Celeste Vane, but a promise of pure, unconditional love.
Grace looked at the ring, tears of joy filling her eyes, and nodded before he could even ask.
Gabriel slipped the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss as the warm spring sun bathed the terrace in golden light.
"Mommy! Gabriel!" Ellie shouted, running up the stone steps, the golden retriever tumbling happily at her heels. She held up a small wooden plate she had taken from the kitchen.
On the plate lay three perfectly divided slices of fresh strawberry cake.
"I divided it!" Ellie announced proudly, holding the plate up high. "One for Mommy, one for Gabriel... and one for Lily’s teddy bear so he doesn't feel left out."

Gabriel knelt down on the warm stone floor, pulling both Grace and Ellie into a tight, loving embrace. He looked up at the clear blue sky, feeling the weight of three years of sorrow vanish completely into the spring air.
The Quiet King had finally found his home. And in a house once built on silence and shadow, love had won the final victory.
