Chapter 8 - Whispers of the Past

Life seemed perfect, but in the world of crime and legacy, the past never stays buried forever.

It was late autumn. Lily and Rose were almost a year old, crawling all over the soft carpets of the estate and filling the halls with laughter. They had Elias’s sharp, intelligent gray eyes and my dark hair. Elias adored them, spending hours after work sitting on the floor, letting them pull his ties and stack wooden blocks.

Then, a letter arrived.

It was delivered not by mail, but left on the windshield of my car while I was visiting a charity foundation I had started for abused mothers in Brooklyn.

The envelope was thick, sealed with red wax bearing an unfamiliar crest. Inside was a single photograph and a handwritten note.

The photograph showed a young girl—maybe five years old—standing in front of an old villa in Italy. The note read:

“Elias Vance thinks he cleaned his bloodline. But the sins of his father remain unpaid. Marcus Miller was not the only man who wanted your daughters dead. Ask your savior about the Valenti pact.”

My blood went cold.

I immediately drove back to the estate, my hands shaking on the steering wheel. When I walked into Elias’s study, he was reviewing architectural plans for a new children's hospital we were funding.

"Elias," I said, slamming the letter onto his desk.

He looked up, surprised by my tone, but his expression hardened the moment he saw the red wax seal.

"Where did you get this?" he asked, his voice dropping an octave.

"Someone left it on my car," I demanded, leaning over the desk. "What is the Valenti pact, Elias? What didn't you tell me?"

Elias let out a long, heavy sigh. He rubbed his face with his hands, looking older than I had ever seen him.

"When my father ran the syndicate," Elias began slowly, "he took a massive loan from the Valenti family—the oldest and most ruthless Mafia clan in Sicily. To secure the debt, my father signed a contract promising that his firstborn son’s first legitimate heirs would be betrothed or surrendered to the Valenti family to merge the empires."

I gasped, staggering back. "Surrendered?! He promised away my children?!"

"No!" Elias stood up, rushing around the desk to grab my arms. "Ava, listen to me! My father signed that contract before I was even born! When I took over the syndicate, I slaughtered my father’s old inner circle and declared all his old pacts void. I thought the Valentis had given up after twenty years!"

"They haven't," I cried, tears of fury springing to my eyes. "They know about Lily and Rose! They think my daughters belong to them!"

"Over my dead body," Elias swore, his voice shaking with absolute rage. "I destroyed Marcone. I destroyed Marcus. I will burn all of Sicily to the ground before I let a single Valenti touch our family!"

Before we could say another word, Viktor burst into the room, his face pale.

"Boss," Viktor gasped. "We have a breach at the lower gate. A convoy of armored vehicles just pulled up. They aren't shooting... they've requested an audience."

Elias looked at me, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying resolve. He reached into his desk drawer, pulled out his weapon, and clicked off the safety.

"Let them in," Elias ordered. "It’s time to end this once and for all."
