Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

Two weeks after the battle at the estate, the snow began to melt, yielding to the faint warmth of early spring.

With Marcus dead and the Blackmask syndicate eliminated, Elias had launched a relentless, surgical strike against the remaining assets of the Marcone family. Within ten days, Marcone was forced to surrender all his territories, flee the country, and dissolve his organization. Elias Vance was now the undisputed ruler of the New York underworld.

Yet inside the quiet rooms of the rebuild estate, the victory felt heavy.

I sat in the nursery, rocking Lily while Rose slept peacefully in her crib. The physical wounds on my back had healed into thin, silvery scars, but the mental scars remained. Every time a door slammed, I flinched. Every time Elias was late coming home from the city, a knot of dread tied itself in my stomach.

The door softly clicked open, and Elias stepped into the room. He had tossed his suit jacket aside, wearing only a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked tired, but the moment his eyes rested on me and the girls, the harsh lines on his face softened.

"You're up late," he said softly, walking over to sit on the plush Ottoman beside my rocking chair.

"I was thinking," I murmured, staring down at Lily's tiny fingers wrapped around my pinky. "About how fast everything changed. A month ago, I was waiting to die under a bridge. Now... I'm sitting in a palace."

Elias reached out, taking my hand in his. His skin was warm and rough, a grounding presence against my anxiety. "This isn't just a palace, Ava. It's your home. If you want it to be."

I looked at him, searching his gray eyes. "Is it, Elias? In your world, peace never lasts. There will always be another Marcone. Another Marcus. How long can you protect us before the violence catches up?"

Elias was silent for a long moment. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his gaze dropping to the floor.

"When I was twelve," he began, his voice barely louder than a whisper, "my father was the boss. He was a cruel, paranoid man. When a rival family threatened us, he used my younger sister as leverage. He traded her safety for a business deal. She died in their custody before I could reach her."

My heart aches for him. I had never heard Elias speak about his past in such detail.

"That day," Elias continued, looking back up at me with raw emotion, "I swore two things. First, I would take control of this city so completely that no one could ever dictate terms to me again. Second... I would never use a woman or a child as a piece in a game."

He stood up, walking to the window and looking out over the dark grounds. "I built this empire out of blood and fear because I thought that was the only way to stay safe. But when I found you in that snowstorm... when I saw how you fought for your daughters with your last breath... I realized that real strength isn't about how many men you can order to kill. It's about what you're willing to protect."

I put Lily down in her crib and walked over to stand behind him, wrapping my arms around his waist and pressing my cheek against his back.

"You saved us, Elias," I whispered. "Not just from the cold. You gave my daughters a future. You gave me back my soul."

Elias turned in my arms, pulling me close against his chest. "I don't just want to be your savior, Ava," he admitted, his voice thick with emotion. "I want to be the man who earns your heart. But I won't force you into my world. If you want to leave—if you want a clean, normal life away from the Mafia—I will set you up anywhere in the world. Unlimited money, top security, total freedom."

I looked up into the face of the man who had terrified Manhattan, the man who had torn through an army of hitmen just to keep me safe.

"I don't want a clean life without you," I said firmly. "My place is here. With you."

Elias’s breath caught. Without another word, he cupped my face in his hands and brought his lips down onto mine in a passionate, deep kiss that erased every lingering shadow of fear in my heart.
