Chapter 9 - The Final Showdown

The grand hall of the Vance Estate was bathed in tension so thick it felt suffocating.
Flanked by twenty heavily armed guards, Elias stood at the center of the room, looking like an ancient king defending his throne. I stood a few paces behind him, holding the pistol he had given me months ago, while the nurse kept the twins locked in the subterranean safe house deep beneath the mountain.
The double doors opened, and an elderly man in a bespoke white suit walked in, supported by a polished silver cane. Behind him were six massive men clad in tailored suits, their hands resting ominously inside their jackets.
Don Donato Valenti. The head of the Sicilian mob.
"Elias Vance," Donato said, his voice smooth and accented like aged wine. "You have grown into a powerful man. Your father would be... disappointed by how weak you’ve made this empire."
"My father is rotting in hell, Donato," Elias spat, his hand resting on the hilt of his gun. "State your business before I have my men paint this marble with your blood."
Donato chuckled, tapping his cane against the floor. "So aggressive. Just like your father. I am here to collect what is owed to the Valenti family. The pact of 1995. You have produced twin daughters. By law of the Commission, one of those girls belongs to my grandson in Palermo."
I couldn't stay silent. I stepped out from behind Elias, my eyes burning with defiance.
"They aren't goods to be traded!" I shouted, pointing my gun straight at Donato's chest. "They are my daughters! Their father was a monster who tried to kill them, and their real father is standing right in front of you! You will never take them!"
Donato turned his cold, ancient eyes to me, examining me with mild amusement. "Ah, the poor girl from the slums. Ava Miller. Marcus’s discarded wife. You have fire, girl. But in our world, blood contracts are written in stone."
"Not in my world," Elias growled, stepping directly between Donato and me. "The pact died with my father. And if you step one foot further into my home, you die here today, Donato."
Donato sighed, shaking his head. "I expected this. You think you are invincible because you beat minor street thugs like Marcone. But you forget who controls the global supply lines, Elias."
Donato raised his hand, signaling his men. "Kill him. Take the mother and the babies."
Before Donato’s hitmen could draw their weapons, a series of muffled gunshots echoed from the courtyard outside.
The doors behind Donato burst open, but it wasn't Valenti reinforcements. It was Viktor, leading a secondary strike team that had completely surrounded Donato’s men from behind.
At the same time, the large video screen on the wall of the hall flickered to life.
It showed Interpol agents and Italian federal police raiding Donato Valenti’s main villa in Palermo, seizing assets, arresting his captains, and locking down his shipping fleets across Europe.
Donato froze, his pale face turning gray as he watched the screen. "What... what is this?"
"Did you really think I spent the last six months just sitting here, Donato?" I spoke up, stepping forward with a cold, triumphant smile. "While Elias was building our legal business, I spent four months working with international prosecutors, tracing every single one of your offshore shell accounts through your European logistics network. You came here to steal my daughters, but you just walked straight into an Interpol sting."
Donato stared at me in total shock. He had underestimated me because I was a woman born in poverty. He had assumed I was weak.
"You..." Donato gasped, his voice trembling.
"It’s over, Donato," Elias said, stepping up to the old man and grabbing his silver cane, snapping it easily over his knee. "Your syndicate is destroyed. Your men are under arrest in Europe. And you... are going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal prison."
Viktor and his men moved in, disarming Donato’s bodyguards and slamming hand cuffs onto the old Don.

As Donato was dragged away, screaming curses in Italian, the hall fell into a profound, glorious silence.
The last shadow of the old world had finally been erased.
