Chapter 7 - The New Empress

Six months later.

The Vance Syndicate was undergoing a transformation that shocked the entire East Coast underworld.

Elias, with my assistance, began legitimizing large portions of his business. Using my understanding of labor networks and logistics, we transitioned money from illegal smuggling rings into legitimate maritime shipping, real estate development, and international trade.

I was no longer just the woman Elias had rescued; I had become his closest strategist and partner.

The underworld began calling me "The Steel Rose." They realized that while Elias was the violent hammer of the Vance empire, I was the brain that guided where it hit.

One afternoon, in the high-rise glass boardroom of Vance Global Enterprises in Midtown Manhattan, I sat at the head of a massive conference table. Surrounding me were six seasoned syndicate lieutenants—men who had spent their lives in crime, now wearing tailored suits and looking visibly nervous under my gaze.

"The docks in Brooklyn are fully converted," I said, sliding a sleek tablet across the table to the oldest lieutenant, a man named Russo. "No more illegal contraband through Pier 42. It’s all legitimate freight now. We’re clearing twenty percent higher profit margins without paying off half the NYPD."

Russo stared at the numbers, astonished. "Mrs. Miller... this is unbelievable. Marcone spent twenty years trying to clean that money and lost millions. How did you negotiate the union contracts?"

"By offering them healthcare and fair wages," I replied with a faint smile. "It turns out men work harder when you don't threaten to break their knees."

The room chuckled nervously, but there was genuine respect in their eyes.

Suddenly, the boardroom doors swung open, and Elias walked in. He wore a sharp three-piece gray suit, looking every bit the high-powered CEO, though the dangerous grace of a mafia king remained in his step.

"Meeting adjourned, gentlemen," Elias announced, waving his hand.

The lieutenants quickly gathered their papers and exited, nodding respectfully to both of us as they left. Once the room cleared, Elias walked behind my chair, placing his hands on my shoulders and leaning down to press a kiss to my temple.

"You're making my captains look incompetent, Ava," he teased softly.

"They're not incompetent, just old-fashioned," I laughed, turning in my chair to face him. "How was your meeting with the district attorney?"

"The charges against our shipping arm have been completely dropped," Elias smiled, his eyes shining with pride. "We're clean, Ava. For the first time in thirty years, the Vance name is legitimate."

"Not completely clean," I noted, eyeing the faint scar on his jaw. "You're still the most feared man in the city."

"Let them fear me," Elias said, pulling me up into a standing position and wrapping his arms around my waist. "As long as they respect you."

"Speaking of respect..." I murmured, sliding my arms around his neck. "Dr. Evans gave me a clean bill of health today."

Elias paused, his eyes intensifying. "And?"

May you like

"And... he said the physical trauma from the twins' birth is completely healed." I leaned up, whispering against his lips. "I think it’s time we stopped sleeping in separate wings of the estate."

Elias didn't answer with words. He scooped me up into his arms, carrying me toward his private executive suite behind the boardroom, closing the door on the past forever.
