Chapter 7 - The Shadows Strike Back

The victory at the Drake Hotel cemented Mara’s reputation as an untouchable icon in both the culinary world and the high-stakes realm of international diplomacy.
Over the next six months, the Devo Syndicate experienced an unprecedented era of peace and financial prosperity. Lucian’s business expanded globally, and Mara’s kitchen became legendary, attracting high-profile political figures, foreign dignitaries, and elite artists who paid tens of thousands of dollars for a single seat at her exclusive private dining events.
However, hatred does not die easily.
In the high-security federal penitentiary outside Chicago, Roland Price sat in his tiny, damp concrete cell, consumed by a bitter, obsessive rage.
Through his remaining legal contacts and his disgraced brother, a corrupt former police detective named Hector Price, Roland hatched one final, desperate plot to ruin Mara Bell forever.
“If I can’t have that kitchen, no one will,” Roland spat through the prison visitor glass to his brother. “I don't just want her dead, Hector. I want her name erased. I want her legacy ruined.”
On a rainy Thursday evening in October, as Mara was preparing an intimate private dinner for Lucian and his top lieutenants at the estate, a sudden alarm blared through the main kitchen.
The main power grid failed, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.
“Backup generators! Initiate emergency protocol!” Owen’s voice boomed over the security radio headsets.
Inside the kitchen, emergency red lights flickered on, casting long, eerie shadows across the stainless-steel surfaces.
Suddenly, the heavy glass skylight above the central prep station shattered into thousands of deadly fragments.
Two men dressed in black tactical gear rappelled down through the roof, landing heavily on the prep counters. They carried military-grade incendiary grenades—designed to burn down the entire kitchen facility and destroy Mara’s private recipe vaults containing her lifetime of work.
“Get the chef out of here!” a cook screamed as panic erupted.
Before the attackers could pull the pins on their incendiary devices, Mara didn't run.
She grabbed a heavy iron copper saucier pan—a forty-pound antique pot she used for large stocks—and swung it with all the force in her body.
CRACK!
The iron pot struck the lead attacker directly across the helmet, sending him crashing into the stainless-steel shelving unit, unconscious before he hit the floor.
The second attacker turned his weapon toward Mara, but a single, terrifying gunshot echoed through the dark kitchen.
Lucian Devo stood in the doorway, his custom silver-plated revolver smoking in his hand. The second attacker dropped to his knees, clutching a bullet wound in his shoulder, his weapon clattering across the floor.
Within thirty seconds, Owen and ten security guards flooded the room, securing the perimeter and pinning the two mercenaries to the floor.
Lucian rushed across the kitchen, grabbing Mara by her shoulders, his eyes searching her face with wild, desperate anxiety.
“Mara! Are you hurt? Talk to me!” Lucian pleaded, his voice trembling—a rare, terrifying break in his legendary ice-cold exterior.
Mara looked down at the copper pan in her hands, then up into Lucian’s dark, frantic eyes.
“I’m fine, Lucian,” Mara breathed, her pulse racing. “My pot is dented, but I’m fine.”
May you like
Lucian pulled her tightly against his chest, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in the world. Mara buried her face in his shoulder, feeling the deep, rapid thump of his heart against her cheek.
“I’m going to end this tonight,” Lucian whispered furiously into her hair. “Once and for all.”
