Chapter 10 - The Master’s Table

Late that evening, after the grand wedding reception had wound down and the last fireworks had faded over Lake Michigan, Lucian and Mara walked hand in hand through the quiet, sun-drenched halls of their estate.

They ended up where their journey had truly begun: the grand dining room.

The long walnut table was set for two.

In the center sat a single plate—a dish Mara had prepared earlier that afternoon with her own hands: a delicate, perfectly roasted rack of lamb served with a fresh thyme, white wine, and butter reduction, garnished with tiny, sweet violet flowers from her new garden.

Lucian pulled out the high-backed chair for his bride.

Mara sat down, looking up at her husband with a soft smile.

Lucian walked around the table, picked up a silver fork, cut a tender piece of lamb, and lifted it to his mouth.

He paused, holding the fork an inch from his lips, his dark eyes twinkling with warm, nostalgic humor.

“Are you going to take my plate away this time, Mrs. Devo?” Lucian asked softly.

Mara reached across the table, her soft, warm hand gently resting over his.

“No, Lucian,” Mara whispered, her heart filled with absolute peace, security, and unyielding love. “This time... the food is clean, the herbs are right, and the table is finally ours.”

Lucian smiled, took the bite, and savored the taste of his new life—a life guarded by the bravest, most brilliant woman he had ever known.
