Chapter 3 - The Purge of the Brigade

At 6:00 AM the following morning, the main kitchen of the Devo Estate was bathed in bright, cold LED light.

The sixteen members of the kitchen brigade stood lined up against the stainless-steel prep tables, wearing their crisp white uniforms. They were nervous, whispering among themselves about the midnight security lockdown, completely unaware of what had transpired in the basement vaults hours earlier.

Sous Chef Julian, Roland’s chief henchman who had routinely dumped dirty water on Mara’s shoes and forced her to work sixteen-hour shifts without breaks, stood at the front of the line, adjusting his tall white toque.

“Where is Chef Roland?” Julian grumbled loudly, crossing his arms. “We’re behind schedule on breakfast prep. And where is that useless cow, Mara? She hasn't set up the pastry stations yet!”

The heavy double doors of the kitchen swung open.

The room went dead silent.

Mara Bell walked into the kitchen.

She did not wear a stained apron or oversized hand-me-down trousers. She wore a bespoke double-breasted executive chef’s jacket in pure black silk, tailored perfectly to her figure, with her name embroidered in gold thread across the left chest: HEAD CHEF MARA BELL.

Behind her walked Owen Kade and four heavily armed estate guards.

Julian’s jaw dropped. The line cooks gasped, staring in absolute disbelief as Mara walked to the center of the kitchen and stood at the pass—the very pass Roland had used to scream at her for three long years.

“Attention,” Mara said smoothly, her voice cutting through the humid morning air like a razor.

Julian stepped forward, a nasty smirk returning to his face. “What is this joke? Why are you dressed like that, Mara? Take that jacket off before Roland sees you and throws you out on the street!”

“Roland Price was removed from these grounds in handcuffs at 2:00 AM,” Mara announced calmly, looking Julian dead in the eye. “He was arrested for conspiracy to commit murder against Mr. Devo. He will spend the rest of his natural life in a maximum-security prison.”

A collective gasp echoed down the line of cooks. Julian turned pale, taking a step back.

“As of 5:00 AM today,” Mara continued, resting her hands on the warm stainless-steel counter, “Mr. Devo has appointed me Executive Head Chef of the Devo Syndicate and all its affiliated hospitality venues.”

“You?” Julian shrieked, his voice cracking. “You’re a prep cook! You don't know how to run a fine-dining brigade! This is insane!”

“I ran this kitchen for three years while Roland was drunk in his office and you were stealing expensive caviar out of the walk-in,” Mara shot back, her tone dropping into ice-cold authority. “I wrote the menus. I balanced the food costs. I corrected every ruined sauce you sent to the pass.”

Mara pulled a thick folder from under her arm and tossed it onto the counter.

“Julian. Assistant Chef Mark. Pastry Assistant Chloe,” Mara called out. “Step forward.”

The three cooks stepped forward, their knees visibly shaking.

“During my three years here, the three of you made it your personal mission to make my life a living hell,” Mara said quietly. “You called me names. You sabotaged my prep work. You mocked my weight, my background, and my family.”

“Mara... please, we were just joking—!” Chloe whimpered, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“You are fired,” Mara said, without a trace of hesitation. “Your personal belongings have already been packed into cardboard boxes at the security gate. Your final paychecks have been docked to cover the cost of the inventory you stole over the last six months. Security, escort them off the property immediately.”

The guards stepped forward, grabbing Julian and the others by their elbows and dragging them out of the kitchen as they screamed insults and pleas for mercy.

Mara turned back to the remaining thirteen cooks, who stood paralyzed with fear.

“To the rest of you,” Mara said, her voice softening slightly. “You stood by and watched it happen because you were afraid of losing your jobs. I understand fear. But under my leadership, this kitchen will be built on respect, discipline, and absolute culinary excellence. If you want to stay, you will work hard, you will respect every member of this team, and you will earn your place.”

She slapped her hand on the counter. “Now... clean these stations, discard every open ingredient in the walk-in for safety inspection, and prep for lunch service. We have a syndicate to feed.”

“YES, CHEF!” the thirteen cooks roared in unison.

Mara turned, her black coat swishing around her ankles, and walked out of the kitchen with her head held high.
