Chapter 1 - The Silence of the Dining Room

The silence that settled over the grand walnut dining table in the wake of Dr. Patel’s words was heavier than lead.

“The leaf contains cardiac glycosides consistent with oleander,” the doctor repeated softly, her professional composure cracking under the absolute weight of what she was reporting. “Ingested in that concentration—hidden beneath the heavy reduction sauce—it would have caused fatal cardiac arrest within forty-five minutes. It would have looked like a sudden, massive heart attack.”

The temperature in the dining hall dropped to freezing.

Executive Chef Roland Price stood perfectly frozen near the kitchen service doors. The smug, condescending sneer he had worn for three years—the sneer that had tormented Mara through thousands of hours of unpaid labor, verbal abuse, and public humiliation—was stripped away, leaving behind the gray, hollow mask of a terrified, exposed man.

Lucian Devo did not move a single muscle. He didn't slam his hand on the table. He didn't shout. He simply sat in his high-backed leather chair, his charcoal suit immaculate, his eyes fixed on the glass vial containing the dark green leaf.

“Oleander,” Lucian murmured. His voice was smooth as velvet, yet every guard in the room immediately placed their fingers on their triggers. “A plant that grows abundantly in the conservatory gardens near the estate's west wing.”

Lucian turned his gaze slowly toward Roland.

“Roland,” Lucian said gently. “You inspected every bundle of herbs that entered my kitchen tonight. You personally vouched for the menu.”

“Lucian—Mr. Devo—sir!” Roland’s voice cracked into a high-pitched, pathetic whine. He stumbled forward two steps, his spotless white apron trembling. “This is a setup! It’s a trick! This... this woman—this kitchen assistant—she put it there! Look at her! She’s been bitter for months! She wanted to destroy my reputation!”

Mara felt the eyes of six armed men swing back toward her, but she didn't shrink away. She stood her ground, her back straight, her hands still stained with the dark, rich veal stock she had spent six hours reducing.

“I didn't enter the west wing gardens, Chef,” Mara said, her voice clear and resonant for the first time in three years. “My access badge only permits me in the basement prep room and the main kitchen walk-in freezer. But your badge, Chef... you unlocked the conservatory door at 4:15 PM today. I saw the log on the kitchen security monitor while I was chopping garlic.”

Roland gasped, his eyes wide with wild, manic panic. “You lying little cow—!”

He made a sudden, aggressive move toward Mara, his right hand reaching into the pocket of his white chef’s coat.

CLICK.

Before Roland’s hand could clear his pocket, Owen Kade—the food taster whose life Mara had saved only thirty minutes prior—stepped between them. In one fluid, brutal movement, Owen seized Roland’s wrist, twisted it back until the bone popped, and slammed the executive chef face-first onto the marble floor.

A heavy silver flask slipped from Roland’s pocket, clattering across the floor before coming to a stop right against the toe of Lucian’s hand-made Italian leather shoe.

Dr. Patel knelt, picked up the flask, unscrewed the cap, and sniffed it carefully. “Concentrated oleander extract,” she reported grimly. “Enough to kill a dozen men.”

Lucian stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket. He looked down at Roland, who was weeping pathetic tears into the polished marble floor.

“For three years, Roland, you told me this young woman was incompetent,” Lucian said, his voice echoing under the high crystal chandeliers. “You called her names. You took credit for her sauces. You told me she was nothing more than a 'kitchen cow' who was lucky to have a job scrubbing my pots.”

Lucian stepped closer, leaning over the disgraced chef.

“It turns out she was the only person in this house with enough eyes to keep me alive... and you were the snake bringing poison into my home.”

Lucian waved a single hand. “Take him down to the vault beneath the wine cellar. Search his home, his private bank accounts, and his phone records. I want to know who paid him to betray me before the sun comes up.”

As three heavy security guards dragged Roland out of the room, screaming and pleading for mercy, Lucian turned back to Mara.

May you like

The room was still, the smell of the roasted veal still lingering in the air.

“Mara Bell,” Lucian said softly, stepping toward her. “You saved my life tonight. You saved Owen’s life. You will never step foot in a basement prep kitchen again.”
