Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

When Gabriel returned to the Fortress at 11:00 PM, the estate was quiet.

He removed his tactical vest, washed the grit from his face in the master bathroom, and pulled on a comfortable black cotton shirt.

He walked down the dim, warm hallway toward the guest wing.

He gently pushed open the door to the grand suite.

Inside, a small nightlight illuminated the room. Lily and Leo were fast asleep on the massive king-sized bed, curled up under a thick velvet quilt, the wooden turtle resting between them.

On the window bench overlooking the stormy sea sat Emma.

She was wearing a soft silk robe, her long brown hair cascading over her shoulders, her reflection ghostly against the dark glass. She held a mug of chamomile tea in her hands.

Gabriel stepped inside quietly, his boots making no sound against the carpet.

“They’re sleeping,” Emma whispered without turning around. “Lily hasn't slept through the night without nightmares in three years. But tonight... she went to sleep in five minutes.”

Gabriel walked over, leaning his broad shoulder against the window frame beside her. “Children know when they’re safe.”

Emma looked up at him. The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face, highlighting the faint scar near his left eye.

“Did you get the money back?” she asked softly.

“Every penny,” Gabriel replied. “And Julian is currently in federal custody in Washington.”

Emma let out a long, ragged breath, resting her forehead against his chest.

Gabriel went rigid for a fraction of a second, unused to soft, vulnerable contact. But as he looked down at her trembling shoulders, his natural protective instincts took over. He wrapped his large arms around her, pulling her close against his chest.

Emma buried her face into his shirt, smelling the rain, leather, and woodsmoke that clung to him.

“I was so scared, Gabriel,” she sobbed softly, her hands clutching his shirt. “For three years, I felt like I was drowning in that giant house. I thought I was losing my mind, losing my daughter...”

“You’re not drowning anymore, Emma,” Gabriel murmured, his hand gently stroking her long hair. “I’m holding you.”

Emma lifted her head. Her blue eyes met his deep green ones.

The distance between them vanished. The grief of their pasts, the blood spilled on the streets, the darkness surrounding them—it all melted away under the intense, electric heat passing between them.

Gabriel leaned down slowly, giving her time to pull away.

Emma didn't pull away. She reached up, wrapping her hand around his neck, touching the silver dog tag and the gold ring.

Their lips met in a slow, deep, possessive kiss.

It wasn't gentle—it was the kiss of two broken souls finding shelter in a violent storm. Gabriel pulled her tight against his body, his large hand cupping the back of her head, claiming her with a fierceness that took her breath away.

When they finally parted, both of them were breathing heavily, their foreheads resting together.

“Gabriel...” Emma whispered, her heart racing.

“I promised Richard I would protect you,” Gabriel rasped, his eyes burning with raw passion. “But I didn't promise him I wouldn't fall in love with you.”

Before Emma could answer, the red emergency alarm on Gabriel’s wrist comm began to flash violently.
