Chapter 4 - The Fortress

The convoy driven through a hidden tunnel carved directly into the seaside cliffs six miles north of Grayhaven.

When they emerged, Emma gasped.

Rising out of the craggy, tide-swept rocks was a modern masterpiece of steel, concrete, and bulletproof glass: The Fortress. It was a massive cliffside estate surrounded by forty-foot stone walls, armed sentries, and sophisticated automated defense turrets.

It was a fortress fit for an underworld king.

When the trucks stopped in the underground garage, forty armed syndicate guards stood at attention.

Gabriel stepped out, holding Lily in his right arm, offering his left hand to Emma.

Emma took it. His grip was firm, warm, and anchored her against the dizzying insanity of the day.

“Welcome to my home, Mrs. Lawson,” Gabriel said.

They were led up a grand spiral staircase into a breathtaking living space overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean. Floor-to-ceiling windows showed the stormy gray sea below, but inside, a massive stone fireplace crackled with warmth.

Leo immediately led Lily toward a play area in the corner filled with books, art supplies, and wooden toys. For the first time in three years, Emma saw a small, genuine smile light up her daughter’s face as she sat beside the eight-year-old boy.

“She likes him,” Emma said softly, standing beside Gabriel near the window.

“Leo hasn't had a friend his age since his mother passed,” Gabriel said, staring out at the ocean. “My wife, Elena... she was killed four years ago by a stray bullet during an ambush targeted at my SEAL team. That’s why I left the military. I came home to protect my son. Then I met your husband.”

“You carry a lot of ghosts, Gabriel Vance,” Emma murmured, looking at his sharp profile.

“We all do, Emma,” he replied softly. “Some of us just build bigger walls around them.”

A side door opened, and a sharp-looking man in a tailored grey suit stepped inside, holding an encrypted tablet.

“Boss,” the man said, casting a cautious glance at Emma. “We have a breach in the financial network. Someone is liquidating Lawson International’s reserve accounts as we speak. Over four hundred million dollars transferred to an offshore account in Panama.”

Emma turned pale. “Four hundred million?! That’s the trust fund reserved for Lily’s medical foundation!”

Gabriel took the tablet, his eyes scanning the green lines of code. A dark, dangerous grin spread across his face.

“Who initiated the wire?” Gabriel asked.

“Julian Vance,” the lieutenant replied. “Your cousin. The man trying to sell out our syndicate to the Iron Covenant.”

Emma choked back a gasp. Julian Vance was a senior board member at Lawson International—and Richard’s closest business confidant.

“Julian...” Emma whispered, horror washing over her. “Julian was at our house last night. He drank tea in our kitchen. He gave Lily a stuffed bear...”

Gabriel’s green eyes turned to liquid ice.

“Julian was the insider who gave the Covenant Richard’s route on Grayhaven Bridge,” Gabriel said, handing the tablet back. “He’s been waiting three years to drain the company dry.”

Gabriel turned to his lieutenant. “Assemble the Strike Team. We’re paying my cousin a visit.”

Emma grabbed Gabriel’s sleeve. “No! Gabriel, wait! Julian has private security, he’s protected by city politicians—you can’t just walk in there!”

Gabriel looked down at her small hand gripping his arm. He leaned down until his lips were inches from her ear.

“Emma,” he purred, his deep voice vibrating through her chest. “You’re in my house now. In my world, politicians don't protect men like Julian. I do.”
