Chapter 2 - The Ambush at the Docks

Emma’s breath hitched. She pulled her phone from her purse—zero signal. A jammer was operating nearby.
Through the glass front window of the quiet waterfront café, she looked toward the curb where her armored SUV was parked. Her two seasoned bodyguards were sitting motionless in the front seats, their heads slumped forward against the glass.
“Oh God,” Emma whimpered, pulling Lily into her arms.
“Mommy, don't cry,” Lily whispered, pressing her face into Emma’s neck. The fact that her daughter was talking was a miracle, but the nightmare unfolding around them threatened to swallow it whole.
CRASH!
The front glass of the café exploded inward in a shower of lethal rain.
Four men in black tactical gear and heavy balaclavas kicked through the shattered door frame, automatic carbines raised.
“Target confirmed!” one yelled. “Take the widow and the girl! Eliminate the witnesses!”
Before the shooter could squeeze his trigger, Gabriel moved. He didn't look like a poor single father anymore—he moved like a panther.
In a single, fluid motion, Gabriel pulled a suppressed SIG Sauer P226 from a concealed holster beneath his canvas jacket.
THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!
Three shots rang out, hushed and precise. The lead shooter fell backward onto the pavement, two rounds centered in his chest plate and one in his throat.
Gabriel vaulted over the counter, grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the kitchen prep line, and hurled it with terrifying force into the face of the second gunman. The metal struck with a sickening crunch, dropping the man instantly.
“Get under the counter! Now!” Gabriel barked at Emma.
Emma didn't hesitate. She grabbed Lily and scrambled behind the thick oak bar, pulling Leo down beside them. Leo didn't cry; he reached out and took Lily’s small, trembling hand.
“Don't worry,” Leo whispered to Lily, his voice steady despite the gunfire. “My dad never loses.”
Gabriel fired around the corner of the bar, suppressing the remaining two assailants. He moved with cold, terrifying tactical perfection—a hybrid of Navy SEAL lethal efficiency and mafia brutality. He didn't just fight; he controlled the room, manipulating angles, cover, and line of sight.
He stepped out into the open, dodged a spray of 9mm bullets, grabbed the third gunman’s rifle barrel, twisted it upward, and slammed his elbow straight into the man's windpipe. As the final shooter tried to flee toward a getaway sedan parked outside, Gabriel threw a combat knife pulled from his boot.
The blade buried itself deep into the driver's tire, causing the vehicle to slam hard into a light pole.
The café fell into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the smell of ozone, gunpowder, and burning rubber.
Gabriel stood amidst the glass and bodies, his gray shirt stained with soot, his eyes dark and deadly. He ejected his empty magazine, slapped a fresh one into his sidearm, and holstered it beneath his coat.
He turned toward the bar. “Emma. Move.”
Emma stood up, trembling violently, shielding Lily with her body. “Who sent them? Who wants us dead?!”
“The same syndicate that hijacked your husband’s shipping company,” Gabriel said, walking over and lifting Leo onto his hip. He then extended his other arm to Lily. “Their name is the Iron Covenant. And they just realized Richard’s daughter knows the truth.”
Lily reached out her small arms toward Gabriel. Without hesitation, she let the dangerous stranger lift her up. She buried her face into his neck, right beside the silver dog tag and the gold ring.
Emma stared in utter disbelief. Lily had never let anyone touch her—not doctors, not relatives, not even her nanny. Yet she clung to this underworld kingpin as if he were a fortress.
“Why does she trust you?” Emma asked, her voice shaking.
Gabriel looked at Emma, his green eyes burning with a dark, protective fire.
“Because three years ago, when I pulled Richard out of the water, his last words weren't a plea for his life,” Gabriel said softly. “He handed me a encrypted drive, looked me in the eye, and said, ‘Save my wife. Save my little girl.’ I gave him my word, Emma. And a Navy SEAL never breaks a promise.”

He turned toward a heavy steel door at the back of the kitchen.
“Now come on. The police in this district are paid off by the Covenant. My armored convoy is around the corner. Welcome to my world.”
