Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Boardroom

At 8:00 PM, the penthouse floor of the Lawson International Tower in downtown Grayhaven was bathed in soft champagne light.

Julian Vance, a slick forty-five-year-old in a tailored Italian suit, was pouring himself a glass of fifty-year-old scotch. On the mahogany desk in front of him, three laptop screens showed green confirmation bars: TRANSFER COMPLETE: $412,000,000.00.

“To fresh starts,” Julian toasted to the empty room, raising his glass.

CLICK.

The lights in the entire fifty-story skyscraper suddenly died.

The floor-to-ceiling city views outside vanished as emergency blackout shutters automatically slammed shut over the windows, sealing the penthouse in total darkness.

“What the hell?” Julian muttered, dropping his scotch glass. He reached into his desk drawer for his revolver.

SWISH.

A red laser dot appeared on the center of Julian’s forehead.

Then another. And another. Six red dots danced across his expensive silk tie.

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open without a sound.

Through the darkness, illuminated only by the faint red glow of laser sights, walked Gabriel Vance. He was dressed in a bespoke black tactical suit, an unlit cigar between his teeth, his suppressed pistol held loosely at his side.

Behind him stood eight massive syndicate enforcers, blocking every exit.

Julian dropped to his knees, his face turning the color of chalk.

“G-Gabriel...?” Julian stammered, his voice squeaking in terror. “You're... you're supposed to be in the docks! How did you bypass the lobby security?!”

Gabriel walked over to the desk, pulled out the high-backed leather chair, and sat down comfortably. He picked up Julian’s glass of scotch, swirled it, and took a slow sip.

“Your lobby security was using cheap radio frequencies, Julian,” Gabriel said smoothly. “My tech team jammed them five minutes ago. Nice scotch, by the way. Richard had good taste.”

Julian swallowed hard, sweat dripping off his chin onto his thousand-dollar suit. “Gabriel, listen to me! We’re family! Cousins! I can give you half! Two hundred million! You can take Leo and leave the country, leave this bloody mob life behind!”

Gabriel set the glass down with a soft clink.

He reached into his jacket, pulled out an encrypted tablet, and slid it across the desk.

“Reverse the transfer, Julian,” Gabriel ordered calmly. “Put the four hundred million back into Lily’s foundation.”

“If I do that, the Iron Covenant will kill me!” Julian screamed, weeping in terror. “They promised me immunity! They promised me the CEO seat!”

Gabriel leaned forward across the desk, his massive frame blotting out the light.

“The Iron Covenant isn't in this room, Julian,” Gabriel whispered, his voice dark enough to chill a man’s blood. “I am. And I give you ten seconds before I hand you over to my lieutenant, who spent six years in a Siberian prison learning how to skin snakes.”

Julian’s hands trembled so violently he could barely type. His fingers flew across the keyboard, entering the biometric overrides.

TRANSFER REVERSED. FUNDS RESTORED TO LAWSON FOUNDATION.

“I did it! Look! It’s back!” Julian sobbed, collapsing onto the carpet. “Please, Gabriel! Don't kill me!”

Gabriel stood up, buttoning his jacket.

“I’m not going to kill you, Julian,” Gabriel said, turning toward the door. “That would be too easy. I’m leaving you right here for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They just received twenty gigabytes of your tax evasion files.”

Gabriel paused at the door, looking back over his shoulder.

“And if you ever speak Emma’s name, or Lily’s name, again... I won't send the FBI. I’ll come back myself.”
