Chapter 7 - The Trap is Sprung

At exactly 9:00 AM the following morning, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the gates of the Thorne estate, followed by a city family services van. Charles Vance stepped out, flanked by a woman in a grey trench coat carrying a clipboard and two local police officers who looked visibly uncomfortable being deployed to the estate of the city’s most powerful billionaire.
The gates opened smoothly, and Charles walked up the driveway with the swagger of a victorious conqueror. He expected to find Alistair Thorne desperate, ready to sign over the port rights to avoid a public scandal.
Instead, when the grand double doors of the manor opened, he was met by a phalanx of seven corporate lawyers, two private videographers recording every angle, and Alistair Thorne standing at the apex of the stone steps, looking down like an ancient king about to pass sentence.
Elena stood beside him, dressed in a fresh, tailored green wool coat, holding Maya, who was happily chewing on a silver rattle.
"Ah, Alistair," Charles smiled, stepping up to the base of the steps. "I see you’ve brought the gallery out. Madam Social Worker, this is the minor I filed the emergency petition for. As you can see, she is being held within the estate under highly irregular circumstances by a non-family member."
The social worker stepped forward, her voice professional but nervous. "Mr. Thorne, we have a warrant to execute a temporary protective evaluation of the minor Elena Vance and the infant Maya Vance based on reports of extreme vagrancy—"
"The warrant is invalid, Madam," Arthur Sterling stepped forward, handing a thick, sealed leather folder to the officer of the court. "As of 6:00 AM this morning, a federal judge has signed a stay of execution on all local family court petitions regarding the minors. Furthermore, we have submitted the certified genetic profile and international birth registry documents establishing a direct paternal link."
Charles laughed, a sharp, dismissive sound. "Paternal link? Richard Vance is dead! I am the closest living kin—"
"Richard Vance was a stepfather who executed a UK adoption decree nineteen years ago, Charles," Alistair said, his voice dropping into the courtyard like a thunderclap. He stepped down the stairs, his eyes locked onto Charles’ face as the billionaire’s arrogance began to crack. "Elena is my biological daughter. We executed a rapid-sequence DNA panel through the university medical center last night using the standard hair follicle samples. The match is ninety-nine point nine percent."
Charles stepped back, his face turning an ash-grey color. "What? No... that’s impossible! Clara left before—"
"Clara left because your father and my father threatened her life," Alistair revealed, standing inches from Charles, his presence entirely overwhelming the smaller man. "But she carried my child with her. Elena isn't a Vance. She is a Thorne. And that means the covenant you tried to use to blackmail me doesn't apply to her. In fact... Arthur, tell him about the secondary filing."
Arthur smiled coldly. "Mr. Vance, we have filed a federal extortion and corporate espionage suit against you and Vance Holdings, utilizing the digital access logs your intelligence team used to illegally breach the city family services database to locate Elena. The federal marshals are currently executing a search warrant at your corporate headquarters in the financial district."
The two local police officers immediately stepped back, rolling their shoulders. "Mr. Vance," the lead officer said, his voice flat. "We were told this was a standard minor recovery tracking. This looks like a corporate dispute. We’re withdrawing our presence from the perimeter."

"Wait! You can't leave!" Charles shouted, his voice rising into a panicked shriek as the social worker also began to step back toward her van, realizing she had been used as a pawn in a billionaire’s war.
"Get off my land, Charles," Alistair said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "And tell your brokers to start selling your stock. Because by tomorrow morning, the Vance name will be nothing more than a footnote in the bankruptcy courts."
