Chapter 5 - The Vultures at the Gate

The atmosphere in the grand study of the Thorne manor turned freezing within minutes. Charles Vance, a smooth-talking, sharp-featured man in his late forties, sat across from Alistair’s massive mahogany desk. Charles was the brother of Alistair’s late wife, Julianna, a marriage of convenience that had ended in a quiet divorce five years prior, leaving Charles with a minority stake in the Thorne logistics network.

Charles smiled, a cold, calculating expression that didn't reach his small, dark eyes. "Alistair, let's not play games. My intelligence team within the city family services network flagged a birth certificate three months ago when a woman named Clara Vance died in the charity ward. A girl named Elena Vance applied for emergency food stamps listing a silver lion necklace as her only asset."

Alistair sat perfectly still, his hands flat on the desk, his features carved from granite. "What do you want, Charles?"

"I want what’s legally mine," Charles said, leaning forward, tapping a silver pen against the wood. "My sister Julianna died without leaving an heir to the Thorne-Vance trust. But twenty years ago, before you married my sister, your father signed a corporate covenant stating that if any bloodline descendant of Clara Vance ever laid claim to the Thorne assets, the entire logistics network would automatically revert to the Vance family holdings to prevent a 'scandalous dilute of the estate.'"

Alistair’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, lethal slits. He remembered that covenant. His father, a tyrannical man obsessed with corporate purity, had forced him to sign it as a condition for taking over the CEO position after Clara vanished. It was a poison pill designed to ensure Alistair could never go looking for her.

"Elena is a minor, Charles," Alistair said, his voice dangerously low. "She has no interest in your corporate covenants. She is here under my personal protection."

"She’s a seventeen-year-old high school dropout with an illegitimate child, Alistair," Charles sneered, his tone dripping with malice. "The media would have a field day with the 'Billionaire’s Hidden Bastard Family.' But more importantly, as her closest living relative on her father’s side—yes, my late cousin Richard was the man Clara married after she left you—I have the legal right to claim custody of both Elena and the infant."

Alistair stood up slowly, his massive frame casting a long, intimidating shadow across the desk. "You touch either of those children, Charles, and I will dismantle your entire shipping firm before the market closes today. I will buy your debt and foreclose on your house."

"You can try, Alistair," Charles stood up to meet his gaze, his arrogance unshaken. "But the law is on my side. I’ve already filed an emergency custody petition with the family court, claiming that Elena is an unfit mother who has been exposing an infant to homelessness and criminal vagrancy. The social workers will be here tomorrow morning with an extraction order. Unless, of course... you want to sign over the North Shore port rights to clear the covenant."

The door to the study opened sharply, and Elena stepped inside, holding Maya tightly against her chest. She had heard every word through the heavy oak door. Her face was pale, but her green eyes were blazing with a fierce, maternal fury that looked exactly like the portrait of Clara that hung in Alistair’s private gallery.

"I’m not going with you," Elena said, her voice ringing clear and strong through the tense room. "My mother told me about the Vance family before she died. She said you were the ones who stole her father’s business and forced her into poverty. You aren't my family. You're just thieves in expensive suits."

Charles turned to look at her, his eyes cold. "Enjoy the big house while you can, little girl. By tomorrow morning, you’ll be in a juvenile facility, and your baby will be in a state nursery awaiting adoption. Let's see how much your 'resilience' is worth then."
