Chapter 6 - The Legal Shield

The next fourteen hours were a masterclass in corporate warfare. Alistair Thorne did not sleep. The entire legal department of Thorne Global Logistics was summoned to the estate, transforming the grand dining room into a high-tech war room filled with glowing screens, active databases, and boxes of decades-old corporate archives.
Arthur Sterling, the legendary family law strategist Alistair had retained, reviewed the 20-year-old covenant with a magnifying glass, his expression grim.
"It’s a tight knot, Alistair," Arthur said, rubbing his tired eyes as the clock struck 3:00 AM. "Your father’s lawyers were meticulous. The covenant states that if any blood descendant of Clara Vance enters the Thorne estate and claims ownership of the legacy assets, the Vance Holdings group has an automatic right of refusal on the maritime shares. Charles is using the custody petition as leverage to force your hand."
Alistair walked to the window, looking out at the dark lawns where security details were patrolling with guard dogs. "I don't care about the shares, Arthur. Sign them over."
"If you do that, you lose control of the primary shipping ports in Chicago and New York," Arthur warned. "It could trigger a shareholder revolt that could oust you as CEO."
"Let them revolt," Alistair said, his voice dropping into a deep, unshakable register. "I lost Clara twenty years ago because I chose the company over her. I am not making that choice twice. If I have to burn the Thorne empire to the ground to keep Elena and Maya safe, tell me where to buy the matches."
Elena stood in the doorway of the dining room, holding a mug of warm tea Mrs. Higgins had made for her. She had been watching the lawyers work for hours, realizing for the first time the sheer magnitude of the storm her arrival had caused.
"Mr. Thorne," Elena said softly, stepping into the room. The lawyers stopped talking, looking up at the young girl who held the fate of their billionaire employer in her hands. "There’s something you should see. It was inside the lining of my mom’s old jewelry box. I brought it with me in my backpack."
She placed a small, yellowed piece of paper on the table in front of Arthur Sterling. It was an official document from the High Court of London, dated nineteen years ago.
Arthur picked it up, his eyes scanning the elegant cursive print. Within seconds, a massive, triumphant smile broke across the seasoned lawyer’s face.
"Alistair... look at this," Arthur breathed, passing the paper to him. "This isn't a birth certificate. It’s an official legal adoption decree from the UK family registry. Richard Vance didn't father Elena. Clara had already been pregnant when she left you, Alistair. She married Richard six months later to give the child a name, but Richard legally adopted her. Elena isn't a Vance by blood."
Alistair looked at the document, his vision blurring as the dates aligned perfectly in his mind. Clara had been pregnant when she walked away from him in London. Elena wasn't Richard Vance’s child.
She was Alistair’s daughter.

"My god," Alistair whispered, his knees turning to water as he looked up at Elena, whose green eyes were shining with the realization of the truth. "You’re mine. You’ve always been mine."
"The covenant is completely void, Alistair!" Arthur laughed, slamming his fist onto the table with professional ecstasy. "The covenant explicitly specifies blood descendants of Clara Vance claiming under the Vance lineage. But Elena is your biological daughter and legal heir under international law! Charles Vance has absolutely no standing on either the custody or the corporate assets. We don't just have a defense... we have an absolute execution."
