Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of the Manor

The heavy iron gates, which had remained closed to the public for over a decade, groaned open with a slow, mechanical rumble. Alistair didn't wait for Marcus to give orders. He stepped out onto the public pavement, reached out, and gently took Elena by the arm, guiding her inside the perimeter.

"Marcus," Alistair commanded, his voice regaining its sharp, executive clarity, though the underlying emotion was still raw. "Cancel the board meeting with the logistics firm. Call Mrs. Higgins. Tell her to prepare the guest suite in the East Wing immediately. I want a medical team on standby to examine the baby, and have the kitchen prepare a full meal."

Marcus looked completely stunned, his mouth opening to protest the sudden breach of security protocol, but one look at Alistair’s fierce, unyielding expression silenced him instantly. "Right away, Mr. Thorne."

Elena walked beside Alistair up the long, winding cobblestone driveway. The sheer scale of the estate was overwhelming, but she was too exhausted, too focused on the weight of Maya on her back, to truly process the luxury. Her legs felt like lead, and the warmth of the morning sun was beginning to make her head spin from lack of nutrition.

As they reached the grand double doors of the mansion, an elderly woman with silver hair and a kind, matriarchal face stepped out, wiping her hands on a white apron. Mrs. Higgins, the head housekeeper who had served the Thorne family since Alistair was a boy, stopped instantly when she saw Elena.

Mrs. Higgins’ eyes darted from Elena’s green eyes to the crescent mark on her neck, and then to the silver lion necklace dangling from her fingers. A sharp gasp escaped the older woman’s lips.

"Alistair..." Mrs. Higgins whispered, using his first name in a rare breach of professional boundary. "Is it... could it be?"

"It’s her, Mrs. Higgins," Alistair said quietly, his voice thick with twenty years of unshed tears. "Get them inside. They’ve been walking for days."

Within minutes, Elena found herself sitting on a soft, velvet sofa in a sunlit parlor that smelled of lavender and fresh beeswax. Mrs. Higgins had gently helped her remove the baby carrier, transferring the still-sleeping Maya to a beautifully embroidered bassinet brought down from the storage rooms.

A young maid entered, carrying a large silver tray laden with roasted chicken, warm vegetable soup, fresh bread, and a tall glass of milk. The aroma hit Elena with the force of a physical blow. Her stomach growled loudly, causing her to flush with embarrassment.

"Eat, child," Mrs. Higgins said softly, sitting down beside her and pressing a warm linen napkin into her hands. "Don't you worry about a thing. You’re safe here now."

Elena didn't need to be told twice. She ate with a quiet, desperate hunger, forcing herself to slow down so she wouldn't become sick. Alistair sat in a leather armchair opposite her, his long legs crossed, his eyes tracking her every movement with a mixture of awe, regret, and a protective instinct that had lain dormant within him for two decades.

When Elena finally finished, she took a long sip of the milk, wiped her mouth, and looked across the table at the billionaire. The initial shock had worn off, replaced by the natural defensiveness of a girl who had spent months surviving on the streets.

"You aren't going to hire me as a maid, are you?" Elena asked, her voice steadying. "You’re looking at me like I’m a ghost. Who was my mother to you, Mr. Thorne?"

Alistair leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his face softening completely. "Your mother wasn't just someone I knew, Elena. Twenty years ago, Clara Vance—before she changed her name to avoid my family—was the love of my life. We were engaged to be married."

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. "Engaged? But... she never told me about a billionaire. She lived in a small, two-room apartment in the industrial district. She worked two jobs at a textile factory just to afford my school supplies."

"Because my father threatened to destroy her family’s business and ensure she never found work in this country if she stayed with me," Alistair revealed, his voice dropping into a dark, bitter register. "I was young, weak, and terrified of losing my inheritance. I let her walk away, believing that my money could eventually buy her back. By the time I took total control of the company and went looking for her... she had vanished into the wind. I spent fifteen years employing the best private investigators in the world, and they found nothing."

He looked over at the bassinet where Maya was just beginning to stir, her small legs kicking against the blankets.

"But there’s one thing I don't understand, Elena," Alistair said, his eyes returning to her face, his gaze intense. "If your mother passed away three months ago... and she was fifty years old... who is the baby?"

Elena’s features tightened, a sudden, fierce protectiveness flashing in her eyes. She stood up instantly, stepping between Alistair and the bassinet. "Maya is my daughter, Mr. Thorne. I am her mother."
