Chapter 4 - The Revelation of the Twin Marks

The silence that followed Elena’s declaration was absolute. Alistair sat completely frozen in his chair, his mind struggling to compute the timeline. Elena was seventeen years old. If Maya was eleven months old, that meant Elena had become a mother at sixteen, navigating the brutal realities of poverty, a dying mother, and pregnancy all at once.

Mrs. Higgins stood up quietly, walking over to the bassinet to lift the crying infant. As she lifted Maya, the baby’s small cotton onesie shifted, exposing the delicate skin on the side of her tiny neck.

Mrs. Higgins let out a muffled cry, her hand flying to her mouth. "Alistair... look."

Alistair stood up, his heart pounding against his ribs like a caged animal. He stepped around Elena, who watched him with a tense, defensive stance, ready to fight to protect her child. Alistair leaned over Mrs. Higgins’ shoulder to look at the baby’s neck.

There, stamped clearly into the porcelain skin of the eleven-month-old infant, was the exact same crimson crescent moon.

The twin marks. A genetic anomaly that defied statistical probability, passed down through Clara’s bloodline like a royal seal.

"She’s beautiful, Elena," Alistair said, his voice cracking as he looked at the baby’s bright green eyes—the exact same shade as Elena’s, the exact same shade as Clara’s. He reached out a hesitant, trembling finger, allowing Maya’s tiny, warm hand to wrap around his thumb. The baby’s grip was surprisingly strong, her small face breaking into a drooling, toothless smile at the sight of the giant man.

The defensive walls around Elena’s posture began to crumble. She sank back onto the sofa, her shoulders dropping as the immense, exhausting weight of the last three months finally broke through her pride. She covered her face with her hands, her body shaking with silent, heavy sobs.

"I didn't know what to do," Elena wept, her voice muffled by her fingers. "My mom got so sick during my last semester of high school. We lost the apartment because the medical bills were too high. I had to drop out to take care of her and Maya. When she died, the landlord took everything—our clothes, our books, everything. I’ve been sleeping in train stations, Mr. Thorne. I was so scared someone would take Maya away from me because I’m underage."

Alistair walked over to the sofa, ignoring the corporate dignity he had spent a lifetime cultivating. He dropped to his knees on the thick Persian rug in front of the crying teenager, gently pulling her hands away from her face.

"Listen to me, Elena," Alistair said, his voice ringing with a fierce, absolute conviction that echoed through the parlor. "Nobody is taking Maya away from you. And nobody is turning you away from this house again. You aren't a maid. You aren't a stranger. You are Clara’s daughter, and that means you are the rightful heir to everything this family has to offer."

Elena looked at him through her tears, her voice trembling. "But... you don't owe me anything. You loved my mother, but I’m just... I’m just a mistake from a life she lived without you."

May you like

"Your mother left you that necklace because she knew that even after twenty years, my heart belonged to her," Alistair told her, his own eyes shining with unshed tears. "I failed Clara because I was a coward. I am not going to fail her daughter. From this moment on, you and Maya are under the protection of the Thorne name. I will file for legal adult guardianship of you, and we will adopt Maya into the estate trust. You will never have to beg for a piece of bread again."

Behind them, Marcus entered the room, his phone in hand, his face pale. "Mr. Thorne... we have a problem. The private security team we stationed at the gates just reported that a vehicle registered to Vance Holdings has just entered the private road. It’s your brother-in-law, Charles. He somehow found out about the girl."
