Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Whisper

Though the Midwest was secured, peace in Mateo’s world was a flower that required constant, ruthless vigilance.

Six months after moving into the new Bainbridge estate, a quiet threat emerged from across the Atlantic.

Viktor’s older brother—Dmitri—had taken command of the Russian Bratva in Moscow. Seeking revenge for Viktor’s execution at the Drake Hotel, Dmitri had dispatched a team of four elite international assassins to Michigan, equipped with military-grade sniper rifles and thermal optics, tasked with eliminating Mara to break Mateo’s heart.

It was a dark, foggy Tuesday evening.

Mara was in her new state-of-the-art clinic on the estate grounds, treating an elderly local farmer’s foot injury, while Leo was upstairs in the main house doing his homework under Dominic’s supervision.

Inside the dark tree line three hundred yards away, two assassins lay in the tall grass, aiming a high-powered thermal sniper rifle directly at the clinic’s brightly lit glass window.

"Target acquired," the assassin whispered into his headset in Russian. "The woman is in the crosshairs. Taking the shot in three... two—"

SNAP.

The assassin’s sentence was cut short as a massive, calloused hand wrapped around his neck from behind, crushing his trachea in a single, terrifying motion.

Mateo Bellaro stepped out of the pitch-black shadows of the forest.

He wore black tactical gear, his eyes burning with a dark, predatory fury that made the second assassin freeze in utter terror.

Behind Mateo, thirty elite Bellaro ghost-operatives emerged silently from the fog, their silenced weapons already trained on the remaining ambush team.

"Did you really think," Mateo whispered, his voice dropping into a register that made the blood run cold, "that I would leave the woods surrounding my wife’s clinic unguarded?"

The remaining assassin dropped his rifle, throwing his hands into the air, trembling violently. "Please! Don Mateo! We were paid! Dmitri sent us!"

Mateo stepped closer, picking up the assassin's dropped sniper rifle and casually snapping the steel barrel over his knee as if it were a wooden twig.

"Tell Dmitri," Mateo said coldly, leaning down until his dark eyes were inches from the terrified assassin’s face, "that if another one of his men sets foot on American soil, I will buy every shipping port in Moscow and starve his empire to death in thirty days."

Mateo turned his back, walking away through the fog toward the glowing warmth of his estate.

"Dominic," Mateo commanded quietly into his radio.

"Yes, Don Mateo?"

"Clean up the woods. Don't let Mara see any blood on her walk back to the house."

"Consider it done, Don."

Ten minutes later, Mateo stepped into the warm kitchen of the manor, having changed into a clean sweater, smelling faintly of cold rain and pine wood.

Mara was at the stove, stirring a pot of warm chicken noodle soup, while Leo sat at the island counter drawing a picture of a crowned wolf with colored pencils.

Mara turned around, offering Mateo a warm, glowing smile that instantly erased every trace of violence from his mind.

"Hey," Mara smiled gently, stepping up to him and kissing his cheek. "Did you finish checking the perimeter fence?"

"All clear, my love," Mateo murmured, wrapping his arms gently around her waist, pulling her close. "The woods are completely quiet."
