Chapter 10 - The Legacy of the Wolf

Three years later.

Autumn had arrived on the upper Michigan estate, painting the vast pine forests in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and deep crimson.

The air was crisp and fresh, carrying the scent of burning wood from the manor’s massive stone chimneys.

Out on the wide stone patio overlooking the private lake, a large teak dining table was set for a festive family dinner.

Dominic sat near the end of the table, sipping a glass of fine Italian red wine, watching seven-year-old Leo teaching his younger sister—two-year-old Mia—how to feed tiny pieces of bread to the ducks swimming near the wooden dock.

Little Mia had inherited her mother’s bright hazel eyes and her father’s dark, wavy hair. She wore a warm wool sweater, giggling wildly as her older brother held her hand so she wouldn't slip on the lawn.

"Careful with her, Leo!" Mara called out warmly from the patio kitchen, stepping outside carrying a large platter of roasted turkey and vegetables.

Mara looked stunning—relaxed, happy, and glowing with the deep contentment of a woman living a blessed life.

Mateo walked out behind her, wearing a dark fleece jacket over a simple shirt, carrying a tray of warm apple cider and fresh glasses. He walked up behind Mara, wrapping his broad arms gently around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched their children play on the lawn.

"How is the new medical wing doing?" Mateo murmured softly, kissing the side of her neck.

"We treated forty patients this week," Mara smiled, leaning back against his chest, feeling his steady warmth. "And the new air-ambulance helicopter you donated saved a pregnant mother from Marquette this morning."

Mateo smiled, resting his hands gently over hers. "Good. Whatever you need, my love. Always."

Down on the grass, little Mia came running up the stone steps on her chubby legs, holding a bright yellow autumn leaf in her small hand.

"Daddy! Mommy! Look!" Mia squealed happily, holding the leaf up toward them.

Mateo laughed—a rich, warm sound that filled the peaceful valley—and dropped to one knee, scooping his tiny daughter into his broad arms, tossing her gently into the air while she giggled with pure delight.

Leo ran up behind her, holding his stuffed gray wolf—now worn and faded from years of love—and sat down on the patio bench beside Dominic.

Mara walked over, leaning against Mateo’s shoulder as he held little Mia against his chest.

Looking out across the golden forest, the quiet lake, and the magnificent home they had built together from the ashes of a dangerous past, Mara knew that the dark night in the snowstorm was long gone.

The wounded boss who had collapsed on her porch steps was now her devoted husband. The terrified little boy was now a brave, happy brother. And the blood trail in the snow had led directly to a life filled with endless grace, absolute safety, and an unbroken legacy of love.
