Chapter 2 - The Convoy of Steel

The storm raged violently as the 420-vehicle armored convoy moved south down Interstate 75 toward Chicago.

Mara sat in the plush, leather-bound rear cabin of a custom-built, bulletproof Mercedes-Maybach SUV positioned directly in the center of the massive motorized fleet. Beside her, little Leo had finally fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, his head resting squarely against Mara’s lap, his small hand still holding her coat sleeve.

Across from them sat Mateo.

He was hooked up to a portable IV drip delivering saline and high-grade painkillers, monitored closely by Mara, who kept her medical gloves on to periodically check his pulse, body temperature, and bandage saturation.

"You should be lying down," Mara instructed sternly, checking the digital heart monitor sitting on the leather bench between them. "Your heart rate is eighty-eight. If those internal sutures tear while we're moving, I'll have to reopen your abdomen in a moving vehicle."

Mateo chuckled quietly, looking out the blacked-out, reinforced glass windows at the line of endless black headlights stretching miles ahead and behind them.

"You are the first person in ten years to give me orders, Nurse Ellis," Mateo murmured, his deep voice vibrating through the quiet luxury of the cabin.

"I’m not giving orders to a syndicate boss," Mara countered, adjusting his IV line with expert precision. "I’m giving orders to a stubborn patient who almost died on my living room floor six hours ago. Keep sitting upright like that and your blood pressure will spike."

Mateo stared at her for a long moment. He had met senators, billionaires, foreign diplomats, and ruthless assassins, but none of them possessed the calm, unyielding courage of the woman sitting across from him. She had seen his crowned-wolf tattoo, she knew exactly who he was, yet she treated him not with terror, but with fierce, unconditional care.

"Why didn't you leave me?" Mateo asked quietly, the noise of the winter wind howling outside the heavy doors. "When you realized who I was... you could have locked the door and let the cold take me. It would have been safer for you."

Mara paused, her fingers resting on his wrist to check his steady pulse. She looked down at little Leo sleeping quietly against her leg.

"When I worked in the Detroit ER," Mara shared softly, her eyes clouding with painful memories, "a man came in with three gunshot wounds. Everyone hesitated because he had gang tattoos on his neck. They debated whether to call the police before prepping the trauma bay."

She looked up, meeting Mateo’s intense gaze.

"He died on the gurney because they hesitated for four minutes," Mara said quietly. "I swore that night I would never let politics, names, or fear dictate whether a human being lives or dies under my care. You were bleeding out, Mateo. And your son was freezing. That’s all that mattered."

Mateo’s dark eyes softened with something profound—a deep, ancient respect that shifted into something far warmer.

He reached out his right hand, placing his broad, calloused fingers gently over hers.

"Marco thinks he stripped me of my strength when he ambushed my detail in the woods," Mateo said softly. "He doesn't realize he drove me directly to the most precious thing I have ever found."

Before Mara could process the sudden heat rushing to her cheeks, Dominic’s voice crackled through the encrypted tactical radio installed in the vehicle's dashboard.

"Don Mateo, we are approaching the northern outskirts of Chicago," Dominic reported. "Our scouts report that Marco has placed armed checkpoints along the highway near the river. He has forty men posted at the toll plaza."

Mateo didn't take his eyes off Mara. His grip on her hand remained firm and reassuring.

"Tell the lead unit to roll straight through them," Mateo commanded smoothly into his collar mic. "If anyone raises a rifle against this convoy, eliminate them."

"Understood, Don Mateo."

Ten miles ahead, the night sky lit up with the brilliant flashes of tactical fire as the Bellaro vanguard obliterated Marco’s blockade in less than three minutes.
