Chapter 7 - The Healing Hearth

Two months after the tragic night at the Drake Hotel, the dust settled completely over the city of Chicago.
The traitorous elements of the syndicate had been systematically eliminated or exiled. The four major families signed a permanent peace accord under Mateo’s strict terms, giving the Bellaro empire absolute control over the shipping ports, logistics hubs, and commercial trusts of the Midwest.
More importantly, the city was peaceful.
On a warm afternoon in late spring, a convoy of black SUVs pulled up to a familiar clearing in the upper Michigan woods.
The snow was completely gone, replaced by lush green grass, blooming wild clover, and the sweet scent of pine trees warming beneath the sun.
Mara stepped out of the Maybach, taking a deep, refreshing breath of the mountain air.
Where her modest, isolated log cabin had once stood before Marco’s men burned it down, a breathtaking new timber-and-stone estate now rested proudly against the tree line.
It was a magnificent craftsman manor—featuring massive glass windows, a wraparound wooden porch, state-of-the-art medical facilities built into the lower wing, and a beautiful playground constructed in the side yard.
"Do you like it?" Mateo’s deep voice spoke from behind her.
Mara turned around.
Mateo walked over, looking completely healed, healthy, and powerful. He wore a simple dark navy sweater and jeans, his broad frame looking relaxed for the first time since she had met him.
"Mateo..." Mara breathed, looking at the incredible house in total awe. "You... you rebuilt my home?"
"I rebuilt our home," Mateo corrected gently, taking her hands in his. "This is where you saved my life. This is where Leo first felt safe again. I bought the surrounding five thousand acres. No one will ever disturb your peace here again."
From the front porch of the new manor, eight-year-old Leo came running down the wooden steps, followed closely by a energetic three-month-old German Shepherd puppy Mateo had bought him for his birthday.
"Mara! Daddy!" Leo cheered, running across the soft grass and jumping into Mara’s open arms. "Look at my new room! It has a telescope pointed at the mountains!"
Mara laughed, picking Leo up and hugging him tightly, kissing his cheek. "A telescope? That sounds amazing, buddy!"
"And look!" Leo pointed toward the lower wing of the house. "Daddy built a whole medical clinic down there! So you can help the people in the town without having to drive to the city hospital!"
Mara looked up at Mateo, her eyes brimming with happy, overwhelm tears.
"You built a clinic?" Mara whispered, her voice shaking.
"The Upper Peninsula needs good doctors and nurses," Mateo said softly, stepping closer and wrapping his arm around her waist. "And the Bellaro foundation has ten million dollars allocated to keep your clinic fully stocked with medicine, equipment, and staff forever."
Mara buried her face against Mateo’s broad chest, feeling the strong, steady beat of his heart against her cheek—the same heart she had fought so desperately to keep beating on her cabin floor six months ago.

"Thank you, Mateo," Mara whispered softly.
"No, Mara," Mateo murmured, pressing a soft kiss into her hair. "Thank you for bringing us home."
