Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House of Mercer

The lead federal agent stepped forward, pulling a thick warrant from his jacket.
"Ryan Mercer, also known as Nathaniel Vance," the agent announced in a loud, solemn voice. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, identity theft, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the officers moved in, Ryan’s sociopathic calm completely broke.
He didn't try to maintain his dignity. He didn't try to speak to his mother or sister. He threw himself across the table, reaching out his hands toward Grant Whitmore in a pathetic, groveling plea.
"Grant! Please! I built this company’s third division! I made you tens of millions! We can make a deal! It was Brooke! Brooke planned the embezzlement!"
"Get your filthy hands off my table," Grant said coldly, turning his back on him.
Ryan turned his desperate, bloodshot eyes toward Claire. "Claire! Sweetheart! Please... listen to me! I did it for us! I was going to come back for you once the money was clear! You know I loved you! Remember the ring? Wherever life takes us, come home! Claire, please tell them!"
Claire stood motionless, watching the man she had once adored reduce himself to a begging, weeping shell of a coward.
She felt no pity. She felt no lingering sorrow. She felt only the profound, clean relief of a woman who had finally stepped out of a nightmare into the light.
"You died eleven months ago, Ryan," Claire said softly, reaching down to slide her hand over the laminated photo of her custom drawing on the table. "And dead men don't get to come home."
The police officers grabbed Ryan by his arms, forcing his hands behind his back and snapping the heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists. He screamed and struggled as they dragged him out of the boardroom, his high-end Italian suit rumpled, his polished shoes dragging along the carpet.
As Ryan was led away, two more officers stepped up to Vanessa and Eleanor Mercer.
"Vanessa Mercer, Eleanor Mercer," the second officer stated. "You are being detained for questioning regarding criminal conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and corporate harassment."
Vanessa began to shriek, kicking at the officers as they led her away, while Eleanor sat weeping silently into her sable coat, completely ruined, her social standing, wealth, and family name destroyed in a single morning.
The boardroom fell silent as the echoes of their screams faded down the corridor.
Grant Whitmore turned to the remaining board members, who were sitting in stunned, breathless silence.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Grant said, his voice firm and steady. "The meeting is adjourned. The Whitmore Development Group will be undergoing a full independent audit, and I am officially stepping back in as active CEO."
Grant turned to Claire, offering her a warm, genuine smile of profound gratitude. "Claire... come with me."
