Chapter 6 - The Council of War

An hour later, the grand study of Whitmore Manor was filled with the low, intense murmur of a strategic council.

A roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace, casting warm golden light over the leather armchairs and mahogany bookshelves. Grant Whitmore sat behind his desk, sipping black tea, while his lead attorney, Marcus Vance (no relation to Ryan's fake identity), laid out the evidence from the Project Phoenix binder across the mahogany surface.

Brooke Vance was already sitting in the back of a police cruiser outside, arrested on charges of corporate fraud, criminal conspiracy, and grand larceny. But the real mastermind—Ryan Mercer—was still free, entirely unaware that his mistress had been arrested and his master plan had been completely exposed.

Claire sat in a plush armchair across from Grant, holding a warm cup of coffee that Avery had poured for her.

"Nathaniel... or Ryan, as you call him... thinks he’s attending a private emergency board meeting at eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Attorney Vance explained, pointing to a schedule on his tablet. "He believes Brooke secured Avery’s signed guardianship papers tonight. His plan was to present those papers to the board, declare Grant incapacitated, and vote himself in as temporary CEO."

"He’s ambitious, I'll give him that," Grant muttered, his tone dripping with disdain. "He spent three years playing the loyal corporate prodigy while stealing my life's work right out from under me."

Grant looked over at Claire. "Mrs. Bennett... Claire. You've given us the key to saving my family's legacy. The police want to arrest him the moment he steps into the lobby tomorrow morning. But I want to know... what do you want?"

Claire looked into the flames of the fireplace. For twelve months, she had lived in a shadow world of grief, guilt, and poverty. She had blamed herself for an argument they had before his crash. She had sacrificed her own pride, her career, and her happiness to mourn a man who had viewed her as nothing more than a disposable prop.

"I don't just want him arrested, Mr. Whitmore," Claire said, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying register of absolute resolve. "I want him stripped of everything. I want his mother and sister to stand in that boardroom and watch him fall. I want them to know that the woman they called 'harmless' was the one who pulled the pin on their entire life."

Grant Whitmore smiled—a hard, ruthless smile that explained how he had built an empire from nothing.

"My dear," Grant said, leaning forward and tapping his cane against the floor. "I like the way you think. Let’s give Ryan Mercer the funeral he actually deserves."

Over the next two hours, Claire, Grant, and the legal team constructed a masterstroke of psychological and legal retaliation.

They wouldn't stop Ryan at the front door. They would let him walk into the twenty-seventh-floor boardroom. They would let him sit at the head of the table. They would let him reach for the crown he had spent three years lying, stealing, and staging a death to claim.

And then, in front of the entire board of directors, the investors, and his co-conspirators, Claire would step out of the shadows and deliver the final verdict.
