Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The temperature in the boardroom plunged to absolute zero.
Ryan’s face turned the color of chalk. His hands, usually so steady and calculating, began to visibly shake against the smooth mahogany table. He stared at Claire as if a ghost had walked out of the earth and stepped directly into his light.
"Claire...?" Ryan gasped, the name slipping from his lips before his brain could filter his panic.
Vanessa jumped up from her chair, her face contorting into a mask of pure fury and terror. "What is this?! Who let her in here?! Security! Get this crazy woman out of here!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Grant Whitmore bellowed, his voice slamming through the room like thunder. He walked straight to the head of the table, staring down at Ryan with utter disgust. "The only people leaving this room today are going in handcuffs."
"Grant... please, this is a misunderstanding," Ryan stammered, frantically trying to regain his composure, his mind racing to find an exit. "Brooke told me you were ill! This woman... she’s unstable! She’s my... she’s an intruder!"
"I am your wife, Ryan," Claire said, her voice clear, bell-like, and carrying across the silent room with absolute authority.
The board members gasped, sitting up in their chairs, looking between Ryan and Claire in utter bewilderment.
"Wife?" one senior director asked. "Nathaniel, what is she talking about? Your name is Nathaniel Vance!"
"His name is Ryan Mercer," Claire stated, taking three deliberate steps toward him, stopping right across the table from where he sat. "Six years ago, he married me. Eleven months ago, he staged his own death in a burned car in a drainage ditch to escape twelve million dollars in corporate embezzlement that he framed me for."
Claire reached into her jacket and pulled out a high-resolution, laminated photograph. She slammed it down on the center of the mahogany table, right in front of the board members.
It was a photograph of the custom wedding ring—the two uneven lines crossing beneath a tiny black diamond—and right beside it was a copy of the handwritten marriage certificate from six years ago.
"You left me to mourn over an empty grave, Ryan," Claire continued, her eyes locked onto his pale, sweating face. "You let your mother and sister treat me like dirt. You had Vanessa fire me from my teaching job yesterday just to keep me quiet. You called me 'harmless' in this very room two days ago."
Claire leaned over the table, her face inches from his.
"Look at me, Ryan," she whispered, her voice cutting deeper than any blade. "Am I harmless now?"
At that moment, the side door of the boardroom opened, and two federal officers escorted Brooke Vance into the room, her hands bound in steel handcuffs, her eyes red and swollen from crying.

"Nathaniel... they have everything," Brooke wept, refusing to look at him. "They raided the storage unit. They found the Caymans accounts. It’s over."
Eleanor Mercer let out a strangled gasp, clutching her chest as she collapsed back into her chair, her regal posture completely shattering. Vanessa staggered backward, her hands covering her mouth as she realized the horror of what was happening.
