Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Shadows

The metal latch rattled as Walt inserted a key from the outside.

Claire’s eyes darted around the pitch-black storage unit in sheer terror. There was nowhere to hide—only the metal drafting table, a few plastic bins, and the open space behind her. If Walt opened the door fully and swept his light across the room, she would be caught instantly.

Thinking with the split-second desperation of a cornered animal, Claire grabbed the heavy leather binder of forged financial documents, slipped it under her rain jacket, and pressed herself flat into the narrow, twelve-inch gap between the back wall of the unit and the heavy steel shelving unit.

The rolling door squeaked loudly as Walt hauled it upward three feet.

"Hurry up, man," a second voice called out from the idling vehicle—a voice Claire recognized immediately as one of the security guards from the Whitmore building lobby. "It’s pouring out here, and the cops patrol this zone every hour."

"Shut your mouth," Walt grunted, stepping inside the unit. The beam of his powerful lantern sliced through the darkness, illuminating the drafting tables and the corkboard.

Walt walked straight to the metal rack where the binder had been sitting seconds earlier. Claire watched through a narrow slit between two plastic totes as his light hit the empty shelf.

Walt froze. His breathing heavy and ragged. "What the..."

He reached out and touched the empty spot on the shelf, then swept his beam across the floor. The flashlight beam passed within six inches of Claire’s face, illuminating her wide, terrified eyes, but the dark shadow of the tote concealed her.

"Where is the Phoenix binder?" Walt muttered, his tone shifting from casual annoyance to cold panic. He stepped deeper into the unit, his heavy boots crunching on stray grit. "It was right here yesterday."

"Did Vance take it with him to the penthouse?" the guard called from outside.

"No, he told me explicitly to burn it after the guardianship papers were signed!" Walt shouted back, turning around in circles, his light wildly darting across the walls.

Claire felt a cold drop of sweat trickle down her neck. If Walt stepped just two inches closer to the rear wall, his foot would strike her shoe. She squeezed her eyes shut, praying with every fiber of her being.

"Check the car, Walt!" the guard yelled. "Maybe Brooke took it! Let's go before someone sees us here in the rain!"

Walt swore violently under his breath, kicked a plastic tote in frustration, and turned on his heel. He ducked under the half-open door, pulled it down with a heavy bang, and slammed the padlock shut.

Claire remained frozen in the dark for five long minutes, listening to the sound of the car engine revving and the tires crunching away into the rainy night.

Only when absolute silence returned to the industrial park did Claire let out a long, shuddering gasp. She slid out from behind the rack, her knees nearly buckling beneath her weight. She pulled the heavy Project Phoenix binder from under her jacket, clutching it against her chest like a shield.

She couldn't use the key to unlock the door from the inside without making noise, but the latch system was simple. She used a small screwdriver from her pocket tool set—something she always carried in her purse—to pop the interior lever.

She slipped out into the pouring rain, pulled the door down, and ran to her car.

As she sat in the driver's seat, the rain hammering against the windshield, Claire realized the terrifying reality of her situation. Ryan—now going by Nathaniel Vance—was planning to burn these documents as soon as he secured temporary guardianship over Avery Whitmore, erasing the proof of his theft and leaving Claire holding the bag for millions in missing funds.

He was moving fast. The board meeting was on Thursday.

Today was Tuesday.

Claire turned the key in the ignition, her hands remarkably steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. She couldn't go back to her apartment—Vanessa would likely have the locks changed by morning, or worse, have Walt waiting in the shadows.

She needed an ally. Someone powerful, someone clean, and someone who hated the Mercers as much as she was beginning to.

Claire thought of the name she had seen on the architectural blueprints: Grant Whitmore.

The billionaire real estate developer was sick, frail, and entirely oblivious to the fact that the man he trusted to run his empire was a wolf in sheep's clothing, planning to steal his daughter and murder his company.

Claire put the car in drive and pulled out onto the wet highway, steering toward the grand, gated estates of East Charlotte.
