Chapter 5 - The Trap Springing

The silver tray slipped from Brooke’s manicured hands, crashing onto the marble floor. The porcelain cup shattered, splashing warm milk across the polished tile.

"You," Brooke gasped, her polished composure completely evaporating. "How did you get in here?"

Claire didn't shrink back. She stepped in front of Avery, positioning herself between the billionaire’s daughter and the woman who had helped orchestrate her life's destruction.

"Hello, Brooke," Claire said, her tone icy and calm. "Or do you go by another name when you're helping dead men steal fortunes?"

Brooke’s eyes darted frantically from Claire to the heavy Project Phoenix binder clutched in Avery’s trembling hands. The realization hit her like a physical blow—the binder Walt had reported missing was right there, exposed under the bright lights of the Whitmore manor.

"Avery, don't listen to her!" Brooke yelled, taking a step forward, her face twisting into a desperate mask of persuasion. "She’s a trespasser! She’s mentally unstable! Her husband died last year and she’s been harassing people all over the city! Give me those papers right now!"

"Stay back, Brooke!" Avery shouted, her voice suddenly ringing with an authority she had never summoned before. She backed up behind Claire, clutching the binder to her chest. "I saw the signatures! I saw the passports! You and Nathaniel... you’ve been poisoning my father's business for years!"

Brooke reached into her designer pocket, pulling out a slim silver smartphone. "Security! Get to the pool house immediately! We have an intruder!"

"It's too late, Brooke," Claire said, stepping directly toward her. "The binder has everything. Every Cayman account, every forged check, every email between you and Ryan. Do you really think Grant Whitmore will let you walk out of this house once he sees this?"

Brooke let out a cruel, desperate laugh. "Grant Whitmore is lying in his bed upstairs, hooked to an oxygen machine, barely conscious! He doesn't even know what day it is! By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, Nathaniel will have the board's vote, and you two will be nothing!"

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the far end of the pool room swung open.

Standing in the doorway was not a team of security guards.

It was an elderly man in a velvet dressing gown, leaning heavily on a carved wooden cane. His face was pale and lined with age, but his dark eyes were burning with a terrifying, razor-sharp intelligence. Beside him stood two uniformed Charlotte police officers and a tall, sharp-suited man holding a legal brief—Grant Whitmore’s personal attorney.

Grant Whitmore raised his cane and pointed it directly at Brooke.

"I know exactly what day it is, Brooke," the old man said, his deep, gravelly voice echoing through the vast pool room. "And it’s the day you and that fraud Vance go to federal prison."

Brooke went rigid, her mouth opening in silent horror as she looked at the billionaire she had assumed was dying.

"Father!" Avery cried out, running past Claire to wrap her arms around the old man.

Grant patted his daughter’s back gently, his eyes never leaving Brooke’s terrified face. "I may be sick, girl, but I’m not stupid. I’ve known for three weeks that money was leaking from the development accounts. I just needed to know who was pulling the strings."

May you like

Grant turned his gaze toward Claire, studying her wet clothes, her muddy shoes, and the fierce, unbroken fire in her eyes.

"You must be Claire," Grant said softly. "The widow who refused to stay buried."
