Chapter 9 - Rebuilding Home

Spring arrived in San Francisco, bringing warm sunshine and blooming white jasmine flowers.
With the Brooks family behind bars and the legal battles finished, my life returned to a beautiful, peaceful rhythm.
Carter Design Studio successfully completed the San Francisco Civic Art Center to national acclaim, earning my firm international recognition and financial independence.
My relationship with Marcus grew into something profound, gentle, and deeply loving. He didn't just love me; he cherished Lily as if she were his own flesh and blood. Every evening, he returned home to help her with homework, read her bedtime stories, and teach her how to ride a bicycle in the park.
One Saturday evening, Marcus took Lily and me to the same Napa Valley vineyard where the nightmare had begun nine months ago.
The ruined altar was gone, replaced by a breathtaking garden of white roses and blooming cherry blossoms that my firm had designed and donated to the local community.
The sun was setting, painting the rolling grapevines in warm shades of gold and pink.
Lily ran through the grass, laughing, chasing butter-flies with her stuffed bunny.
Marcus took my hand, leading me to the center of the cherry blossom garden.
"You brought me back here?" I asked softly, smiling up at him.
"I wanted to replace the worst memory of your life with the best one," Marcus replied, his eyes burning with intense, devoted love.
He slowly reached into his jacket pocket and dropped to one knee on the grass.
I gasped, covering my mouth with my hand.
Marcus pulled out a simple, elegant velvet box. Inside rested a breathtaking heirloom ring—a radiant sapphire surrounded by small diamonds.
"Emily Carter," Marcus said, his voice deep and trembling with emotion. "You are the strongest, most incredible woman I have ever known. You fought through darkness to protect your daughter, and you showed me what true love really means. I don't just want to be your husband; I want to be the father Lily deserves. Will you do me the honor of marrying me?"
Before I could answer, Lily came running over, her eyes wide with excitement.
"Say yes, Mommy! Say yes!" Lily giggled, jumping up and down.
Tears of pure happiness overflowed down my cheeks.
I knelt down beside Marcus, wrapping my arms around his neck, kissing him deeply.

"Yes!" I sobbed happily against his lips. "Yes, Marcus! A thousand times yes!"
Marcus laughed, wrapping his arms around both of us, pulling Lily into our embrace as the sun set over the blooming garden.
