Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Rain

The Napa Valley vineyard was dark, abandoned, and shrouded in heavy rain when I pulled my car onto the gravel driveway.

The white wedding archway where I had abandoned Ryan three weeks ago still stood in the center of the courtyard, soaked and dilapidated.

Inside the main estate house, a single light burned in the master parlor.

I threw open the heavy oak doors, my heart slamming against my ribs. "RYAN! GIVE ME MY DAUGHTER!"

Inside the parlor, Ryan sat in a leather armchair, holding a glass of scotch. Beside him stood Victoria, looking frantic and disheveled.

In the corner of the room, Lily was locked inside a small glass sunroom, crying hysterically, pounding her tiny fists against the reinforced glass.

"Mommy! Mommy!" Lily sobbed.

"Lily!" I ran toward the glass door, but Ryan jumped up, pulling a heavy black hand-gun from his jacket and aiming it directly at my chest.

"DON'T MOVE!" Ryan screamed, his eyes wild, bloodshot, and completely unhinged.

I froze, raising my hands slowly, my body shielding the direction of the sunroom.

"Ryan... put the gun down," I pleaded, forcing my voice to stay calm despite the terror gripping my soul. "This is kidnapping. Federal charges. You will go to prison for the rest of your life."

"I'm already going to prison, Emily!" Ryan yelled, sweating profusely. "Your lawyer ruined everything! The FBI froze our accounts this morning! My mother and I are ruined!"

"You ruined yourselves!" I shouted back. "You tried to steal from an orphan!"

Victoria stepped forward, her voice trembling. "Just sign the liability release papers, Emily! Sign the papers dropping the fraud charges and hand over control of Lily’s trust fund, and we’ll give you the girl and leave the country!"

"She's not signing anything," a deep, booming voice announced from the doorway.

Ryan turned his gun toward the entrance.

Marcus Vance stepped into the room. He didn't look like a lawyer anymore. His coat was soaked with rain, his face dark with lethal authority. Behind him, through the glass windows, red and blue police lights lit up the stormy night sky.

"Put the gun down, Ryan," Marcus said, walking steadily into the room, stepping directly between Ryan’s gun and me. "The estate is surrounded by twenty armed tactical officers. You have thirty seconds before they breach the doors."

"I'LL SHOOT HIM!" Ryan screamed, trembling violently as he aimed at Marcus's chest. "I HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE!"

"You have your life to lose, Ryan," Marcus said softly, taking another step forward, completely unfazed by the weapon pointed at his heart. "Look at yourself. You're pointing a gun at the woman who trusted you, in front of a child who thought you were her father."

Ryan looked at Marcus, then looked past him at Lily crying behind the glass.

For a second, a flicker of guilt crossed his frantic face.

That second was all Marcus needed.

Marcus struck like a cobra. He grabbed Ryan’s wrist, twisted it upward, and slammed his elbow into Ryan’s jaw.

BANG!

A gun shot fired harmlessly into the ceiling, showering plaster across the room.

Marcus swept Ryan’s legs out, slamming him onto the hardwood floor, disarming the gun and pinning him down with a knee to his spine.

The heavy oak doors were kicked open, and a dozen SWAT officers swarmed the room.

"POLICE! DON'T MOVE! GET ON THE GROUND!"

Victoria shrieked as female officers handcuffed her, pulling her to the floor.

I sprinted past the officers, unlocked the glass sunroom door, and pulled Lily into my arms.

"Mommy's here! Mommy's here, baby!" I wept, holding her tightly against my chest, covering her face with kisses.

Lily wrapped her arms around my neck, sobbing into my shoulder. "I knew you'd come, Mommy! I knew it!"

Marcus stood up, adjusting his suit jacket, watching us with tears in his dark eyes. He stepped over to us, wrapping his arms around both of us, sealing us in a protective embrace as the police led Ryan and Victoria away in chains forever.
