Chapter 6 - The Trap

While my heart was finding peace, the Brooks family was spiraling into desperation.
With the loss of the Civic Art Center project and their illegal offshore banking activities exposed, Brooks Capital was facing an immediate federal audit. Their stock price plummeted sixty percent in one week.
Driven by blind rage and impending financial ruin, Ryan decided to execute a final, reckless move.
It was a rainy Thursday afternoon. I was at my studio finalizing blue-prints, while Marcus was at the federal courthouse filing final indictment papers against Victoria.
My phone rang. It was Lily’s elementary school principal.
"Miss Carter?" the principal’s panicked voice came through the line. "We have a major situation. A man presenting a signed temporary guardianship document just picked Lily up from the front office!"
My heart stopped. The coffee cup in my hand crashed to the floor, shattering into a hundred pieces.
"Who?!" I screamed, grabbing my purse. "Who took her?!"
"Mr. Ryan Brooks," the principal stammered. "He showed a notarized document stating he was her legal stepfather—"
"HE IS NOT HER STEPFATHER!" I shrieked, sprinting toward the door. "CALL THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY!"
I dialed Marcus as I ran to my car, my hands shaking so violently I could barely unlock the vehicle.
"Marcus!" I sobbed into the phone. "Ryan took Lily! He took her from the school!"
"What?!" Marcus’s voice exploded with lethal fury over the speaker. "Where are they going?!"
"I don't know! The principal said he had a legal document—"
"It’s fake," Marcus spat out. "He’s trying to use her as leverage to force us to drop the federal charges! Emily, listen to me. Check the GPS tracker in Lily’s stuffed bunny."
Six months ago, after David’s accident, I had placed a tiny Apple AirTag inside Lily’s favorite plush rabbit for safety.
I opened my phone app. The green dot was moving fast along Highway 29... heading back toward the Napa Valley vineyard.
"He took her to the vineyard," I said, cold dread washing over me.

"I’m ten minutes behind you," Marcus barked. "Do not engage him alone, Emily! He’s desperate!"
"He has my daughter, Marcus!" I screamed, slamming my foot onto the gas pedal. "I'm going!"
