Chapter 8 - Poetic Justice

Six months later.
The United States Federal Court in San Francisco was packed to maximum capacity.
I sat at the prosecution table alongside Marcus Vance and the Assistant United States Attorney.
Across the room sat Ryan Brooks and Victoria Brooks, both wearing orange federal prison jumpsuits, their wrists locked in heavy steel cuffs.
Judge Patricia Harris slammed her heavy wooden gavel onto the bench.
"We are here for final sentencing in the matter of United States v. Victoria Brooks and Ryan Brooks," Judge Harris declared, her stern voice echoing through the silent courtroom.
She looked down over her glasses at the defendants.
"I have reviewed the extensive evidence of corporate fraud, grand theft, wire fraud, and the horrifying kidnapping of a five-year-old child," Judge Harris stated. "The actions of the defendants represent the absolute pinnacle of human greed and moral depravity."
She turned her attention to Victoria first.
"Victoria Brooks. For your masterminding of financial fraud and child endangerment... I sentence you to twenty-two years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
Victoria collapsed into her chair, weeping hysterically.
Judge Harris then looked at Ryan.
"Ryan Brooks. For your participation in financial extortion, armed kidnapping, and assault... I sentence you to thirty years in federal prison."
Ryan stared blindly at the floor, his life completely destroyed.
Judge Harris turned her gaze to me, her expression softening into one of immense respect.
"To Miss Emily Carter," Judge Harris said warmly. "You demonstrated extraordinary courage, resilience, and unwavering motherly devotion in the face of unimaginable cruelty. This court officially grants you full, unassailable legal adoption rights over Lily Carter, permanently sealing her legacy and her safety."
The entire courtroom erupted into cheers and applause.
I buried my face in my hands, tears of pure joy streaming down my cheeks.

Marcus turned to me, a radiant smile on his face, pulling me into a warm, triumphant hug.
"It's over, Emily," Marcus whispered into my hair. "They can never touch you again."
