Chapter 2 - The Exile and the Evidence

The rain began to fall just as Marcus’s black SUV pulled away from the Napa Valley estate.

Inside the quiet vehicle, the heater hummed softly. Lily had cried herself to sleep in the back seat, wrapped in Marcus’s soft cashmere overcoat, holding her stuffed bunny tightly against her chest.

I sat in the front passenger seat, staring out at the blurred grapevines in the rain, my silk wedding dress feeling like a heavy, suffocating weight.

"You did the right thing, Emily," Marcus said quietly, keeping his eyes on the road. "David would have beaten Ryan to a pulp if he were alive to see that."

A tear finally escaped my eye, slipping down my cheek. "I felt so blind, Marcus. Ryan played dolls with her. He read her stories. How could someone fake that for two years?"

"Because Ryan Brooks didn't want a family," Marcus replied grimly. "He wanted a picture-perfect trophy wife to show off to his family's corporate investors. You're a brilliant architectural designer, Emily. You brought prestige to his image. Lily was just an inconvenience he planned to phase out once he had legal control over you."

I looked back at Lily sleeping peacefully. My heart burned with raw protectiveness.

When my first husband, David, died in that terrible highway accident three years ago, I promised him on his hospital bed that I would protect Lily with my life. She was only two years old then. Her biological mother had abandoned David when Lily was an infant. I was the only mother she had ever known.

"He won't get away with this," I whispered.

"He won't," Marcus agreed. "Because while you were walking down that aisle, my paralegal was running a background check on Brooks Financial."

I turned to look at him. "What do you mean?"

Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out a manila folder, handing it to me.

"Ryan didn't just rush this wedding because he loved you, Emily," Marcus revealed, his voice dark. "Your late husband David left his entire architectural firm and a $15 million trust fund to Lily, with you as the sole trustee until she turns twenty-one. Ryan’s family firm is currently $8 million in debt due to illegal offshore gambling investments made by his mother, Victoria."

My blood ran cold. The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with sickening precision.

"They were going to use the marriage to gain control of Lily’s trust fund," I realized, horror suffocating my chest.

"Exactly," Marcus said. "Once you signed that marriage certificate, Ryan would have filed for joint legal guardianship over Lily’s inheritance. The cruel comments at the wedding weren't an accident, Emily. Victoria was testing you. They wanted to see if they could break your spirit and make you compliant."

I gripped the folder until the paper crumpled in my hand.

"They wanted a war?" I whispered, looking back at my sleeping daughter. "I'll give them one."
