Chapter 9 - The Promise at the Rose Path

Two months later, winter had arrived, dusting the grand estate in a pristine blanket of white snow. Christmas lights twinkled along the stone archways, and a massive evergreen tree stood in the main foyer, decorated with shimmering gold ribbons and vintage glass ornaments.
It was Christmas Eve. The estate was filled with warmth, music, and the delicious scent of traditional Italian cooking.
A small, intimate gathering was being held in the grand hall—not a massive political event with hundreds of fake high-society elite, but a cozy celebration for the inner circle. Marco was there, smiling and laughing with the security staff; Antonio was sitting by the fire, drinking fine wine; and Lucia was watching over Emma as the toddler played with a new wooden dollhouse.
Alessandro gently touched Sophia’s elbow, leaning down to whisper in her ear. "Come outside with me for a moment."
Sophia smiled, wrapping a thick velvet coat around her shoulders as she followed him out through the side doors into the private garden.
The night air was crisp and silent. Snow fell gently around them, dusting the rose arches where, months ago, a tragic wedding was supposed to take place. But the memory of that day no longer carried pain; it felt like a distant life that belonged to someone else.
Alessandro led her to the center of the white-rose path. Solar lights embedded along the stone walkways cast a warm, golden glow against the pristine snow.
"Do you remember this spot?" Alessandro asked softly, stopping and turning to face her.
"I do," Sophia said, her breath forming small clouds in the frosty air. "This is where Emma ran up to you."
"That was the day my life truly began," Alessandro said, taking both of her hands in his gloved ones. "Before that day, I was walking down a path laid out by obligation, greed, and bad traditions. I was ready to marry a nightmare just to satisfy the expectations of my title."
He looked deeply into her brown eyes, his voice thick with raw emotion.
"A three-year-old girl and a brave woman showed me what truth looked like," he continued. "You showed me that loyalty isn't forced—it’s earned through love and protection."
Alessandro reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.
Sophia’s heart skipped a beat, her hand flying to her mouth.
Alessandro didn't hesitate. He dropped down onto one knee—not out of defeat, and not under the weight of a child's desperate plea, but out of absolute, unyielding love.
He flipped the box open. Inside sat a breathtaking diamond ring, elegant, simple, and shining with brilliance under the moonlight.
"Sophia Carter," Alessandro said, his voice steady and full of conviction. "I don't offer you a life of syndicate politics or dangerous alliances. I offer you my heart, my protection, and my everlasting devotion. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you let me be a father to Emma, and build a real family with me?"
Tears spilled over Sophia’s cheeks, hot against the chilly air. She dropped to her knees in the snow right in front of him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.
"Yes!" she sobbed happily into his shoulder. "Yes, Alessandro! A thousand times yes!"
Alessandro wrapped his powerful arms around her waist, pulling her close and holding her against his heart. When he pulled back slightly, he cupped her face and pressed his lips to hers in a tender, passionate kiss that sealed their promise under the falling snow.
From the warm glass doors of the mansion, Lucia, Marco, and little Emma stood watching. Emma clapped her hands happily, bouncing on her toes.

"Look, Grandma!" Emma cheered softly. "Mommy isn't crying anymore!"
Lucia smiled, wiping a tear from her own eye as she hugged the little girl. "No, sweetie. Those are happy tears. The best kind."
