Chapter 7 - Unspoken Feelings

Two weeks later, life at the Moretti estate had begun to return to a calm, peaceful rhythm, though it was a distinctly new kind of normal.
The security was still tight, but the atmosphere of fear was gone. The grand mansion, once cold and rigid under the looming threat of the Romano alliance, now felt warm and alive.
Old Antonio was back in the gardens, smiling as he tended to the rosebushes, knowing his position was secure forever. The household staff worked with a renewed sense of pride, knowing that their Don truly had their backs.
In the sunlit kitchen, Sophia was preparing a light breakfast. She wore a simple white blouse and a dark skirt. Her hands were fully healed, the bandage on her palm replaced by a faint, fading pink scar—a reminder of a storm she had survived.
Emma was sitting at the low breakfast counter, happily swinging her legs while coloring in a drawing book with bright crayons.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway, and Alessandro walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual sharp business suit; instead, he wore a casual dark sweater with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
Emma’s face lit up instantly. "Alessandro!" she cheered, putting down her crayon.
Alessandro smiled warmly, walking over and lifting the three-year-old into a high-five before softly patting her head. "Good morning, little artist. What are you drawing today?"
"A castle," Emma proclaimed proudly, pointing at her paper. "With a big garden and a dog!"
"It looks magnificent," Alessandro said genuinely.
He then turned his gaze to Sophia. She offered him a soft, quiet smile, pouring a fresh cup of coffee and sliding it across the counter toward him.
"Thank you," he said, taking a sip. "How are you feeling today?"
"Better," Sophia admitted, leaning against the counter. "I still wake up sometimes thinking I hear footsteps in the hallway, but... then I remember where we are. I remember that we're safe."
"You will always be safe here," Alessandro said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers.
A gentle silence fell between them—a silence filled with unsaid words and unspoken emotions that had been building since that chaotic morning at the altar.
"Alessandro," Sophia began carefully, looking down at her coffee cup. "The estate is settling down now. The threat is gone. I know... I know I need to start looking for a place for Emma and me to live. I can't stay in the guest quarters forever, and it wouldn't be right for us to burden you—"
"Burden me?" Alessandro interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, serious tone. He set his cup down and took a step closer to her. "Sophia, do you really think you are a burden?"
"No, but... I was hired as a housekeeper," she explained softly, her eyes shining with vulnerability. "Things have changed so much. People in your world... they talk. I don't want my presence to cause rumors or undermine your authority."
Alessandro reached out, gently taking her hands in his. The sensation made Sophia’s breath hitch.
"Let them talk," Alessandro said firmly. "I don't care about the rumors of the Commission, and I certainly don't care about high society gossip. You and Emma brought life back into this cold house. My mother loves having you here. Emma belongs here."
He paused, his thumb softly tracing the back of her hand.
"And so do you, Sophia. If you leave... this place goes back to being just a fortress. With you here, it feels like a home."
Sophia felt a tear slip down her cheek, but a soft smile broke through. "Alessandro..."
"Don't look for apartments," he requested softly. "Stay. Not as a housekeeper. Never as a housekeeper again. Stay here... with me."
Emma looked up from her coloring book, sensing the emotional weight of the moment. She reached over and placed her small hand over their joined hands.

"Stay, Mommy," Emma chimed in with perfect toddler logic. "Alessandro has the best cookies."
Alessandro laughed—a rich, genuine sound that Sophia had rarely heard before—and Sophia couldn't help but laugh through her tears, nodding her agreement.
