Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Wall

The night air was freezing as Alessandro stood near the perimeter wall of Pier 42, watching the orange flames flicker against the dark water of the Hudson River. Fire trucks were arriving, their sirens wailing in the distance, but the damage was already done. Two of his men were being loaded into ambulances with gunshot wounds.
Alessandro approached the brick wall where the crude message was painted. The threat against Sophia was clear, direct, and unforgiving. Isabella wasn't satisfied with merely leaving; she wanted revenge on the servant who had exposed her true nature.
"They're trying to draw you out, Don Alessandro," Marco said, stepping up beside him, holding a heavy umbrella over his boss as a light drizzle began to fall. "Isabella knows how important protocol and loyalty are to you. She knows you won't give up Sophia, which gives her father a pretext to wage an all-out war of aggression."
"She overestimates her leverage," Alessandro said, staring at the burning warehouse. "She thinks Sophia is a pawn. She doesn't realize that in my house, every person under my roof is protected under the same oath."
He turned back toward his armored SUV. "We are moving Sophia and Emma out of the main estate tonight. The mansion is too high-profile. If Carmine launches a full assault, I won't risk them being caught in the crossfire."
"Where will you take them?" Marco asked.
"To the lake house in upstate New York," Alessandro replied. "It’s off the official registry. Only you, my mother, and I know the location. Set up a ghost security team—men we trust with our lives."
An hour later, back at the Moretti estate, the household was moving under cover of darkness. The grand chandeliers were dimmed, and heavy curtains were drawn over every window.
Alessandro walked up the carpeted stairs to the third floor. He knocked gently on the door before opening it.
Sophia was packing a small suitcase on the bed. She looked exhausted, her hair slightly disheveled, but her movements were steady. Emma was fast asleep on the oversized armchair, wrapped in a plush woolen blanket, holding her stuffed bear tightly against her chest.
Sophia looked up as Alessandro walked in, her hands pausing over a folded sweater.
"We heard about the pier," Sophia whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "It’s my fault, isn't it? If Emma and I had just stayed quiet, if we hadn't said anything..."
Alessandro stopped her, walking over and placing his hands firmly on her shoulders. The warmth of his touch seemed to ground her instantly.
"Listen to me, Sophia," he said, looking deeply into her eyes. "Never say that again. You and Emma saved me today. You saved this entire family from a woman who would have destroyed us from within. What Carmine Romano is doing is the desperate act of a coward who cannot handle the truth. You are not to blame."
Sophia looked at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "I was so scared for so long, Alessandro. When my husband died, I thought I was completely alone in the world. I thought people like the Romanos could do whatever they wanted to people like us, and no one would ever care."
"I care," Alessandro said softly, his voice carrying a sincerity that surprised even himself. "My mother cares. This family cares. You are safe here."
Sophia took a shuddering breath, nodding slowly. "Thank you," she whispered.
"We are moving you to a safe house tonight," Alessandro explained. "A quiet place by a lake. You'll be comfortable there, and no one will find you. I will personally accompany you."
Sophia looked down at Emma sleeping peacefully. "Will you be coming with us, or are you staying to fight?"
May you like
"I will see you safely settled first," Alessandro said. "Then I will deal with Carmine Romano once and for all."
Twenty minutes later, a convoy of three dark vehicles slipped quietly out of the rear gates of the Moretti estate, disappearing into the rainy night, heading north toward the mountains. Unbeknownst to them, a pair of night-vision binoculars watched them from a parked sedan half a mile down the road, and a finger clicked a transmitter button.
