Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the Lake

Julian Romano grinned, a wicked, arrogant expression identical to his sister's. He held Sophia tightly, the barrel of his gun pressing hard enough against her skin to leave a mark.

"You embarrassed my family, Alessandro," Julian sneered. "You dumped my sister at the altar for a servant and her brat. Do you have any idea what that did to our standing in the city? My father wants their heads on a spike, and he wants you on your knees."

Emma began to cry softly, her tiny face buried in Sophia's neck. "Mommy... I'm scared..."

"Hush, baby," Sophia whispered, despite her own terror. "Look at me, sweetie. Keep your eyes on Mommy."

"Shut the kid up!" Julian barked, pressing the gun firmer. "Alessandro, kick your weapon down the stairs. Right now, or I swear to God I'll end her right here."

Alessandro stood at the base of the stairs. His mind raced, calculating distances, reaction times, and line of sight. He slowly bent down, placing his pistol on the floor, and slid it forward with his foot.

"There," Alessandro said, keeping his hands raised at chest height. "You have me, Julian. Let the woman and the child go. They have nothing to do with syndicate business."

"Oh, but they do," Julian laughed chillingly. "Isabella specifically asked for the housekeeper. She wants to watch her suffer before we deal with you."

Julian stepped forward toward the top step of the staircase, preparing to force Sophia down. But as he shifted his weight, he made a fatal error—he momentarily eased the tension in his arm, lowering his weapon an inch to negotiate the steep steps.

In that fraction of a second, Sophia acted.

Driven by a mother’s instinct to protect her child, Sophia drove her heavy heel directly down onto Julian’s instep with all her force. At the same time, she elbowed him hard in the ribs.

Julian gasped in pain, his balance faltering on the top step.

"Now, Alessandro!" Sophia screamed, shoving Julian backward.

Alessandro didn't waste a millisecond. He didn't reach for his gun on the floor; instead, he drew a concealed tactical blade from his belt sheath and sprinted up the stairs with terrifying speed.

Julian recovered his footing and raised his gun, but Alessandro was already upon him. Alessandro grabbed Julian’s gun wrist, twisting it violently until a sharp snap echoed through the hall. Julian screamed as the gun clattered down the wooden stairs.

Alessandro delivered a devastating knee to Julian’s chest, pinning him against the banister. He grabbed Julian by the collar, hoisting him up over the railing, hovering over the twenty-foot drop to the stone fireplace below.

"Please!" Julian gasped, his arrogance completely evaporating into pure terror as his feet dangled in the air. "Alessandro! Don't! We're family—we were supposed to be brothers!"

"You threatened my family," Alessandro said, his eyes darker than the midnight sky outside. "You threatened a child."

"Wait! Wait! It was Isabella!" Julian sobbed frantically. "She planned the warehouse attack! She convinced my father to send the strike team! She's at the abandoned marina down the road, waiting for us! She has a boat ready to escape to Canada if this failed! I can take you to her!"

Alessandro held him over the edge for three grueling seconds, letting the fear consume the man entirely. Then, with a grunt of disgust, Alessandro hauled him back over the railing and slammed him onto the hardwood floor, unconscious with a swift blow to the jaw.

Marco rushed up the stairs, blood dripping from a small graze on his shoulder, but looking victorious. "The outside team is neutralized, Don Alessandro. State police haven't been alerted—we managed to keep it contained."

"Tie him up," Alessandro ordered, pointing at Julian. "Call the main house and have Uncle Matteo secure the Romano family elders. We have the leverage we need now."

Alessandro immediately turned to Sophia. She was sitting on the floor, holding Emma close, trembling uncontrollably from the adrenaline crash.

Alessandro knelt beside them, wrapping his powerful arms around both of them, pulling them against his chest. Sophia buried her face in his neck, sobbing softly as the reality of survival washed over her.

"It’s over," Alessandro whispered, stroking her hair. "You were incredible, Sophia. You saved us both."

"I couldn't let him hurt you," Sophia whimpered softly into his shoulder. "I couldn't."

Alessandro pulled back slightly, looking into her tear-streaked face. Something fundamental had shifted in that moment of shared danger. He wasn't just protecting a servant anymore; he was protecting the woman who held his heart.
