Chapter 9 - The Legacy of the Farmhouse

As the summer sun set over the green fields of Cedar Falls, my father’s farmhouse was filled with the sweet sound of laughter.

Wren, now nearly three years old, was running barefoot across the lush green lawn, holding a bright yellow pinwheel while my father chased after her, laughing louder than I had ever heard him laugh before.

I sat on the porch swing, watching them, sipping an iced tea.

The old farmhouse had been renovated. We had opened up the porch, planted new rose bushes along the walkway, and built a massive wooden play set in the backyard for Wren.

Arthur Pendelton stepped onto the porch, carrying a fresh batch of legal documents—not for court, but for the launch of the Langston Foundation for Abandoned Mothers, a non-profit organization Dad and I had founded using part of the recovered funds to provide shelter, legal aid, and financial support for young mothers facing domestic abuse and spousal abandonment.

"The first ten mothers have been moved into the transitional housing unit in Iowa City," Arthur smiled, handing me the progress report. "Your father's strategic setup worked perfectly, Laura."

"It wasn't just a setup, Arthur," I smiled, looking out at my father lifting Wren onto his shoulders. "It was protection."
