Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Mercer

Six months later, the dust had finally settled over Cedar Falls.

Corbin Mercer was convicted of misdemeanor financial fraud and sentenced to two years of probation, along with five hundred hours of community service. Unemployable in the banking sector, he was forced to take a night-shift job stocking shelves at a local warehouse, living in a tiny basement apartment on the outskirts of town. Half his paycheck was automatically deducted every two weeks for child support and debt repayment.

Elaine Mercer’s social standing in town was completely destroyed. Unable to face her former friends at church or the country club, she sold her remaining furniture and moved into a low-income senior living complex two hours away in Des Moines, forgotten by everyone she had once tried to impress.

Julianna Vance had disappeared entirely, her business liquidated to pay off her uncle's bank losses.

One evening in July, I drove past the warehouse on my way home from the grocery store. I saw Corbin standing near the loading dock in a sweat-stained high-visibility vest, hauling heavy wooden pallets into the back of a semi-truck under the scorching summer heat.

He looked up for a split second, catching sight of my clean white SUV.

I didn't slow down. I didn't glare at him. I simply kept my eyes on the road ahead, driving toward the home where my daughter was waiting.
