Chapter 2 - The Freeze

Julianna ran down the stairs in her pajamas, her expensive mascara smearing as she saw two county tow trucks pulling into the snow-covered driveway.

"Corbin! What is happening?!" Julianna screamed. "They’re hooking up my Mercedes!"

"Hey! Stop!" Corbin shouted, sprinting onto the porch in his slippers. "You can't tow that car!"

"Mr. Mercer," the sheriff’s deputy stepped in front of him, placing a hand on his holster. "That vehicle was purchased using a loan backed by your personal savings account at Regional First. Since that account was seized this morning under a federal judgment lien filed by Colonel Langston, the collateral is being repossessed."

"Everett, you bastard!" Elaine screamed, rushing my father with her fingers curled like claws. "You ruined our Christmas! We gave your useless daughter a home!"

My father didn't even flinch as the second deputy blocked Elaine, escorting her back onto the porch.

"Laura built that home," Dad said, looking Elaine dead in the eye. "She cooked your meals, paid your utility bills, and nursed your son when his business failed. You threw her and a twenty-month-old baby into a sub-zero blizzard on Christmas Eve."

Dad stepped closer to Corbin, who was standing frozen on the icy steps, shivering uncontrollably as the cold air bit through his silk robe.

"You thought I was just an old man who fixed fishing boats, didn't you, Corbin?" Dad murmured softly. "You forgot that before I fixed boats, I broke men who thought they were smarter than the law."
