Chapter 4 - Returning Home

While Corbin and his family huddled in a dingy motel, I stepped back into my home.

The front door was open, and a cleaning crew hired by my father was already at work, throwing away Julianna's left-behind belongings and scrubbing the house clean. Wren was strapped safely in her stroller, holding her stuffed lamb, giggling as Dad pushed her through the hallway.

"It feels different," I whispered, walking into the living room where the Christmas tree still stood, its lights twinkling softly against the snow outside.

"It's yours now, Laura," Dad said, placing a warm hand on my shoulder. "Not theirs. The title is officially transferred to the Langston Family Trust. No one can ever push you out of this door again."

Arthur Pendelton, Dad’s long-time attorney and former Army JAG officer, walked into the kitchen carrying a briefcase.

"Laura," Arthur said, laying out several legal documents on the clean counter. "We filed for emergency divorce proceedings this morning under grounds of severe spousal abandonment, domestic endangerment, and marital fraud. Given the evidence from the storm last night, Judge Harrison has granted full temporary custody of Wren to you, with zero visitation rights for Corbin until a psychological evaluation is completed."

I let out a long breath, feeling years of anxiety melting away. "What about his job at the bank?"

Arthur exchanged a subtle look with my father.

"Well," Arthur smiled grimly, "that's where the second part of your father's file comes into play."
