Chapter 10 - The Quiet Leader

That evening, after Wren had been tucked into her bed with her favorite stuffed lamb, Dad and I sat on the porch under a blanket of bright, clear stars.
The night air was warm and sweet with the smell of fresh-cut grass.
"Dad?" I asked softly, resting my hand over his on the porch railing.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Did you know from the very beginning? Before Corbin and I even got married?"
Dad took a slow breath, gazing out at the quiet road that led back toward town.
"I knew Corbin was weak, Laura," Dad said gently. "A man who talks loudly about his status is usually trying to hide how hollow he is inside. But I hoped—I truly prayed—that I was wrong. I hoped he would grow up and treat you the way your mother deserved to be treated."
He turned his gray eyes to me, filled with a deep, unconditional love that no storm could ever wash away.
"But a commander never goes into a battle without a contingency plan," Dad added, a soft smile touching his lips. "If a man builds a house on sand, you don't fight him while he's inside. You just wait for the storm to hit, and you make sure your family has a fortress to stand on when the walls come down."
I smiled, leaning my head against my father's shoulder.

The wind blew gently through the leaves of the old oak trees surrounding the farmhouse—a quiet, peaceful wind that carried no ice, no fury, and no fear.
We were home. And we were safe forever.
