Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

Judge Thomas did not waste time. She took her seat, her expression hardened back into stone as she looked at Claire and her legal team.
"This court has reviewed the evidence presented over the last three months," Judge Thomas began, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "What began as a tragic case of severe child neglect has spiraled into a shocking display of criminal conspiracy. The evidence linking the mother's romantic partner to an attempted attack on the petitioner is ironclad."
Claire buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Claire Vance," the judge continued, "you completely abandoned your duties as a mother. You weaponized your daughter's love, forcing her to endure physical pain and psychological trauma to cover for your own infidelity and negligence. Your actions are reprehensible."
The judge struck her gavel. "The court hereby orders the following: Leo Vance is granted sole legal and physical custody of Valerie and Mateo Vance. The mother’s parental rights are terminated effective immediately. She is stripped of any claims to the marital home or family assets due to the egregious nature of her conduct."
Furthermore, Judge Thomas looked at the bailiffs. "Based on the newly uncovered evidence of conspiracy, I am issuing a warrant for the immediate arrest of Claire Vance as a co-conspirator in the attempted assault of Leo Vance."
Two police officers stepped forward, pulling Claire’s hands behind her back and clicking handcuffs into place. She screamed, shouting curses at me, at the judge, and at the world, as she was dragged out of the courtroom in front of dozens of flashing cameras.

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for years. The war was over. The healing could finally begin.
