Chapter 7 - The Turning Tide

The man on my driveway was named Tommy Rigg, a small-time criminal with a long rap sheet. In exchange for avoiding a severe prison sentence, Tommy agreed to turn state's evidence. Under the supervision of the police, he allowed detectives to monitor a phone call between himself and Sterling’s executive assistant.

On the recorded call, the assistant explicitly confirmed the payment for "handling the Leo Vance problem" and promised a second installment once the job was done.

"We have them," Marcus said, slamming his fist on his desk the next morning. "This is attempted manslaughter, witness tampering, and conspiracy. Richard Sterling is going to prison, and Claire is going with him if she knew about it."

"Can we prove Claire knew?" I asked, holding a sleeping Mateo in my arms.

"We don't need to prove it for the custody case," Marcus smiled fiercely. "The mere fact that her billionaire boyfriend tried to assassinate the father of her children to win a custody battle will completely obliterate her credibility in front of Judge Thomas. No judge in the country would let children near a woman associated with a criminal syndicate."

Meanwhile, I had to prepare Valerie for her deposition. Dr. Vance had advised that Valerie speak to the judge in chambers, away from the terrifying presence of her mother.

The afternoon before the final trial, I sat with Valerie on the back porch. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.

"Val," I said gently, "tomorrow is the big day. You're going to talk to a very nice lady judge. She just wants to know the truth about how things were at home. Are you scared?"

Valerie looked down at Rex, who was chewing on a bone nearby. "A little bit," she admitted. "I'm scared Mommy will be angry at me. She always said if I wasn't perfect, she would leave. Now she's gone, and I feel like it's my fault."

I lifted her chin so she had to look into my eyes. "Valerie, listen to me very carefully. Adults make their own choices. Mommy left because of her own choices, not yours. You did nothing wrong. You saved your brother's life that day. Tomorrow, you just tell the judge the truth. The truth is your shield. It will protect you, and it will protect Mateo."

She hugged me tightly. "I love you, Daddy."

"I love you more than life itself, sweetheart."
