Chapter 4 - The Shattered Pieces

The morning sun brought no warmth, only the cold reality of a broken home. Claire had fled into the night before the flashing blue lights arrived, realizing that a police record would destroy her social standing and her corporate job. The officers had taken my statement, documented the house, and looked at the footage with expressions of disgust.
By 8:00 AM, my living room was filled with professionals. A child psychologist named Dr. Elena Vance, recommended by Marcus, sat on the carpet with Valerie.
Valerie was clutching a stuffed bear, her eyes darting to me every few seconds for reassurance. Rex lay right beside her, resting his massive head on her lap, acting as a living shield against the world.
"Valerie," Dr. Vance said gently, "you did a wonderful job keeping Mateo safe. You are a hero. But I need you to tell me, has Mommy asked you to do this before?"
Valerie looked down, her small fingers twisting the bear’s fur. "Whenever Daddy goes to training," she whispered. "Mommy says she has 'special meetings.' She tells me if I don't take care of Mateo, it means I don't love our family. She said... she said if I told Daddy, he would leave us because we're too much trouble."
A cold rage washed over me, but I kept my face blank. I knelt beside my daughter and took her small hand. "Look at me, Val. Look at Daddy."
She raised her tear-stained eyes.
"I will never, ever leave you. What Mommy said was a lie. You are a child. Your only job is to play, learn, and be loved. I am the daddy. Protecting this family is my job. Do you understand me?"
She nodded slowly, a tiny sob escaping her lips as she threw her arms around my neck.
While Dr. Vance comforted Valerie, Marcus pulled me into the kitchen. The milk had been cleaned, but the air still felt heavy. He laid out a stack of legal documents on the counter.
"We file for emergency sole custody at 9:00 AM when the courthouse opens," Marcus said, tapping the papers. "With the police report, the medical evaluation of the bruise, and the security footage, Claire doesn't have a leg to stand on. But she’s hired a notoriously dirty defense lawyer, Bradley Vance—no relation to Elena. They’re going to try to paint your Army career as a hazard. They will claim you have PTSD and are prone to hallucinations or anger."

"Let them try," I said, my teeth clenched. "I’ve faced enemy fire and natural disasters. A corrupt lawyer doesn't scare me."
"It's not just about fear, Leo," Marcus warned. "It's about survival. Claire’s lover is Richard Sterling, the CEO of Sterling Development. He has deep pockets, and he’s funding her defense. This isn't just a divorce anymore. It’s a war."
