Chapter 5 - The Opening Salvo

The courtroom was suffocatingly hot. I sat at the plaintiff's table, dressed in my best civilian suit, looking every bit the disciplined soldier I was. Marcus sat next to me, organizing his notes with practiced calm.

Across the aisle sat Claire. She looked immaculate, wearing a conservative gray suit, her hair tied back perfectly to play the role of the grieving, wronged mother. Beside her was Bradley Vance, a man with a sharp, predatory smile and expensive gold cufflinks.

Judge Margaret Thomas, a stern woman with a reputation for zero-tolerance for nonsense, took her seat. "We are here for the emergency custody petition regarding Valerie and Mateo Vance. Mr. Vance, you may present your case."

Marcus stood up, confident and resolute. He didn’t use flashy words. He simply presented the facts. He played the security footage. The courtroom was dead silent as the audio of seven-year-old Valerie crying out that her back was hurting echoed through the speakers. The judge’s eyes narrowed into slits as she watched Claire kiss Richard Sterling and leave the house with the front door unlatched.

"Your Honor," Marcus concluded, "this is not a simple case of a marital dispute. This is a severe, documented pattern of child abandonment and psychological abuse. We request immediate, exclusive temporary custody with zero visitation rights for the mother until a full trial can be conducted."

Bradley Vance stood up, smoothing his tie. "Your Honor, while the video is admittedly unfortunate, it is a single isolated incident out of context. My client was under immense psychological stress due to her husband's constant absence. Furthermore, we must look at the environment Mr. Vance provides. He is a retired military officer who actively participates in dangerous emergency-response training. He keeps a trained attack dog—a German Shepherd—in the same house as a toddler and an infant."

He pulled out a folder. "We have records showing Mr. Vance was treated for combat-related stress eight years ago. We argue that he is an unstable individual who has staged this situation to alienate the children from their loving mother. Claire was simply trying to find comfort in a time of extreme marital neglect."

Claire squeezed out a single, perfect tear into a tissue.

Judge Thomas looked down at the documents, then at me. "Mr. Vance, step forward."

I stood up and walked to the podium. "Yes, Your Honor."

"Is it true you were treated for combat stress?"

"Yes, Your Honor. Eight years ago, after a deployment where we lost several men. I sought therapy voluntarily, completed it, and have been cleared for duty by both the military and civilian medical boards every year since. I believe in facing trauma, not running away from it." I looked directly at Claire. "And I have never left my children alone to protect my own selfish desires."

The judge nodded slowly. "The court grants temporary sole custody to the father. The mother is allowed supervised visitation once a week at a state-approved facility. No exceptions. We set the final trial date for three months from today."

As we walked out of the courtroom, Claire blocked my path in the hallway. Her face was twisted in rage, the tears completely gone. "You think you won, Leo? Richard has more money than you’ll see in a lifetime. By the time this trial is over, I’ll take everything you own, and I’ll make sure my children call him 'Daddy'."

"Try it," I said, stepping past her. "See what happens."
