Chapter 3 - The Midnight Confrontation

I didn’t reply to her text. Instead, I called Marcus, my oldest friend from the service and a top-tier family law attorney in the city. When he answered, his voice was thick with sleep, but within ten seconds of me explaining the situation, he was fully awake.

"Tell me you downloaded the footage," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"I have it on three separate flash drives," I replied, staring at the screen where Claire was smiling into the arms of another man. "And I’ve already taken photos of Valerie’s bruises."

"Good. Don't touch anything else. Don't clean the kitchen floor entirely—take photos of the state of the house. This is criminal child neglect, Leo. If you confront her tonight, keep your cool. Your military record is immaculate; don't ruin it by losing your temper."

At 11:45 PM, the headlights of a taxi cut through the darkness of our driveway. I sat in the pitch-black living room, Rex sitting silently at my feet.

The front door clicked open. Claire walked in, humming a tune, carrying several shopping bags from high-end boutiques. She flicked on the light switch, and the sudden brightness revealed me sitting on the sofa, still in my tactical uniform, my eyes cold as ice.

She jumped, dropping a bag. "Leo! Good god, you scared me! Why are you sitting in the dark?" She quickly tried to mask her shock with a smile, walking over to kiss my cheek. I leaned back, avoiding her lips entirely.

"How was the seminar, Claire?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

"Oh, exhausting," she sighed, fake-rubbing her temples. "Just endless lectures on corporate marketing. I'm starving. Did Valerie clean the kitchen like I asked her to?"

"Valerie is seven years old," I said, standing up. The sheer size of my frame made her take a step back. "She spent the day carrying a six-month-old infant until her spine nearly buckled. She has a hematoma on her shoulder."

Claire’s face went pale, but she quickly recovered, her eyes hardening. "Oh, don't be so dramatic, Leo. It builds character. She needs to learn responsibility. You're always away with your emergency training, leaving everything to me—"

"I know about the black sedan, Claire."

The silence that followed was absolute. The boutique bags slipped from her fingers.

"I know about the man. I know you came back at 2:00 PM, kissed him in our hallway, and left our children alone with the door wide open while you went to a hotel." I pulled out a tablet and pressed play. The video of her and her lover in our house began to fill the quiet room.

Claire stared at the screen, her mouth opening and closing like a fish. "Leo... I... it's not what it looks like. He's just a client... we were..."

"Get out of my house," I said softly.

"You can't kick me out! This is my house too!" she shrieked, her mask completely shattering. "I’ll take the kids! I’ll tell the judge you're an unstable veteran! You'll never see them again!"

"The police are already on their way, Claire. I filed a report for child endangerment twenty minutes ago. If you’re here when they arrive, you leave in handcuffs. Choose wisely."
