Chapter 10 - A Future Written in Light
One year later.
The annual county fair was in full swing, the air filled with the scent of roasted corn, cotton candy, and fresh hay.
I stood near the edge of the central arena, holding a cup of hot coffee, watching Valerie ride her new pony around the wooden ring. She rode with confidence, her posture straight, her face lit by the golden rays of the setting sun.
Beside me, Mateo—now a sturdy eighteen-month-old toddler—was holding my thumb with both of his small hands, taking steady, deliberate steps across the soft grass while Rex walked beside him, matching his slow pace step for step.
A soft breeze rustled through the oak trees surrounding the arena.
My phone rang in my pocket. I pulled it out to see a notification from my legal team: The final asset liquidation of Vanguard Logistics has concluded. The remaining proceeds have been deposited into the children's trust.
I didn't open the file. I didn't care about the numbers anymore.
I slipped the phone back into my pocket, leaving the past where it belonged—buried beneath the weight of justice and truth.
Valerie finished her lap around the ring, trotting her pony up to the wooden fence where I stood.
"Daddy! Did you see me?!" she called out, her voice bright, strong, and clear—a voice that would never again whisper in fear, a voice that belonged to a child who knew she was loved beyond measure.
"I saw you, sweetheart," I said, stepping up to the rail and taking her hand in mine. "You were perfect."
She smiled, looking out over the crowded fairgrounds, then back at me and her little brother.
"We’re going to be okay now, right, Daddy?" she asked softly.

I reached up, wiping a stray strand of hair from her face, feeling the warmth of her hand, the strength of her spirit, and the unshakeable foundation of the home we had built together from the ashes.
"We're better than okay, Valerie," I said, holding her hand tight as the stars began to shine above the mountains. "We're finally home."
