Chapter 9 - The Unbroken Bond

That afternoon, the shelter was quiet under the warm summer sky.
Valerie walked down the rows of kennels, holding my hand tightly on one side and Marcus’s hand on the other. Marcus had become a permanent fixture in our lives, visiting every weekend to help me build a horse stable near the back pasture.
At the end of the hall, a small three-month-old Golden Retriever puppy sat near the wire door, tilting its head curiously as Valerie approached.
Valerie knelt down, extending her hand slowly. The puppy immediately licked her fingers, letting out a small, happy bark before flopping onto its back to show its belly.
"This one, Daddy," Valerie whispered, her eyes filled with tears of happiness. "This one needs us."
"Then this one comes home," I said, bowing my head to touch hers.
As we walked out of the shelter toward my truck, carrying the new puppy in a small basket, Marcus looked over at me with a warm smile.

"You built a good life here, David," Marcus said, resting a heavy hand on my shoulder. "You saved them."
"No, Marcus," I looked down at Valerie, who was gently stroking the puppy’s soft fur in the back seat beside Mateo’s car seat. "They saved me. They showed me what’s worth fighting for."
